Got this under 44% sale and still not worth it. It has halo effect. Lens ajustment, calibration settings, zoom and trying all modes didnt help even 1%.
After moving the projector too close to the screen halo effect gone but colors are terrible. Maybe a manufacturing defect but forums says many people have this issue.

I was very skeptical of buying a ‘4k shifting’ projector, but the technology really does work. The image is crisp, and does represent that 4k pop. The HDR on this is also quite good, simple HDR demos really bring out how well the laser brightness pairs with this feature.

I would say that after searching for a while I landed with a projector that satisfys my next generation itch from my Benq W1070. The picture is just phenomenal, and no bulbs to worry about.

The lack of HDMI 2.1 is a bit disappointing but doesn’t really impact me too much. It does have eArc that works well with my Onkyo receiver. The CEC functions don’t appear to work too well, but that’s just the way that technology goes.

I have a 140″ screen and this has no problem lighting the whole thing up with lights on somewhat, definitely love the quick on/off too.

    Overall – highly recommended!

I upgraded this from an 8-year-old HD Optoma (which we’ve loved).

This newer model has been fantastic. Brighter, sharper picture with fabulous contrast.

PRO TIP: I discovered the hard way that none of my old HDMI cables or switches would work (e.g., I have an HDMI/audio splitter so I can send the video signal to the projector and the audio to my Sonos speaker system).

None of the old HD cabling or devices will work with a 4k projector, particularly if (a) you want to access all of the projector’s features (e.g., image presets, detailed image controls) or (b) you want to stream video in 4k. This layer issue is due to copyright protections on 4k video streams. Make sure your cables and devices are HDCP 2.2/2.3 compliant.

I went from a UHD 50 after two bulbs and two years. This new laser unit is so far superior to the bulb style units it’s unbelievable. I was never really impressed with the last unit it was a bit fuzzy and not nearly as bright as I would have liked. This unit is crystal clear and has a much brighter and sharper picture than the bulb unit ever had. I am very impressed and very happy with this projector! I’m using a 150 in screen and it looks like a regular TV!

The Good – this projector is very bright, allowing viewing in brightly lit rooms.
The Bad – 4k HDR at 60 fps consistently fails.
The Ugly – the focus is uneven, making you choose what is in focus.

This opinion is based on testing three units.

I purchased one of these units based on the solid reviews. The first unit had massive data corruption on all HDMI ports, leading to flashing, banding, and HDCP issues. The problems were worse on the lower numbered ports. After speaking with the manufacturer, I got a replacement from Amazon. I didn’t spend much more time on this one because it was so bad. I replaced all the HDMI cables with Ultra High Speed HDMI Certified cables, tested with shorter runs, and upgraded to a powered certified cable for the longer run.

The second unit was much louder, with a distinctly annoying fan. While the data issues were better (no flashing / banding on any port) it consistently failed HDCP checks on HDMI ports 1 and 2. Port 3 worked most of the time, but especially with Disney+ the HDCP check would fail. Rebooting the projector would generally work around this. I hooked up my computer to the projector, and was shocked by how bad the focusing was for text. In a movie you might not notice, but for desktop use it was painful. I was careful to align the projector properly (see the squared up photo). All four corners are in focus, but the center top (ceiling mounted orientation) is out of focus. You can see the difference in the two photos of the browser address bar with my finger shadow to show that it’s in focus. I expect all ports to work perfectly with the advertised data rates with no optical issues. I returned this unit as well.

The third unit was the best of the three. However, it still had the focusing issues, and still will fail to play Disney+ every few days, requiring a system reset.

    Summary

    – While the data rates for 4K HDR at 60fps are incredibly hard to get right, I expect it to consistently work when advertised. It does not.
    – Pixel perfect optical focusing should be table stakes for any projector. This one fails in that regard.
    – All three were incredibly bright. 3000 lumens is just fantastic.

This projector works fine if you’re only going to watch movies at 1080p, but in that case, get a cheaper model.

This is an excellent unit. I do not understand the bad reviews on this site. People do not appreciate good projectors.
For the price, this is unbeatable unit. It is a lazer projector with a 4K image for a ridiculously low price.
What is wrong with you people writing bad reviews about this unit? This projector has excellent color, excellent contrast ratio, good blacks, excellent resolution, and an lazor light source (little maintenance required). I’ve had it for over 3 months, now. It is a very good projector. I’ve had many projectors in my life. Trust me, I know what I’m talking about. Optoma makes good projectors. They also respect their warranty period policy, and are trustworthy. I like this projector. You can spend 8 000 $ getting a higher end projector, which is probably too big for your entertainment room, and marginally better. With this unit, you get an excellent 4K lazer projector dirt cheap.

So far the projector has been great for the price point. This is the only 4k laser projector I could find for under $5k. You can tell it is cheaper with the way the case feels, and how the software works. However at this price point I can deal with that for the awesome picture it puts out! Everything looks great and the picture is super bright. I’ve had to turn brightness way down in our media room. It is honestly bright enough to be in a living room/non media setting. I did buy the extra coverage on it as well just in case, but so long as longevity doesn’t become an issue I think this is a great buy.

I had an old Optoma HD33 projector that served me well for over 10 years, so I thought I’d stick with Optoma again when upgrading to 4k. I was initially happy with the image quality and brightness, but slowly some disappointing things emerged.

First and foremost there are noticeable focus uniformity issues (when the top centre is pin sharp the bottom left is soft, and when the bottom left is sharp the top centre is soft). And no, I don’t have the image on an angle or any geometric correction enabled.
It is more evident when displaying text, so I used that in a video to demonstrate the issue wo Optoma, and they said that it’s not a data projector and just meant for movies and games. I countered with the fact that there is text in games (e.g. menu/setting screens), and there is also text in the interfaces of streaming services that play movies, but they refused to do anything and suggested that I just find a mid point where both parts are relatively in focus. That’s unacceptable to me with a projector that cost this much.

Secondly, the PureMotion (frame interpolation) feature doesn’t work properly. Not everyone likes this feature, but I do. It won’t work when the input device (streaming box, console etc.) is set to 4k 60hz output. None of my other displays (projector or multiple TVs) have this issue. They all enable the feature with 60Hz input, as long as the content being played is 24fps or 30fps. The only way I can get it to work with the UHZ50 is to force my streaming device (NVidia Shield) to output at 4k 24Hz. However, when doing that the audio is off by about 250ms, which is enough to be pretty noticeable.
PureMotion also doesn’t work with 3D content (frame packed from a 3D disc, or side by side converted), even though it says it’s enabled. Additionally, whenever I watch 3D content that’s converted from a 2D side by side video, the audio is also waaay off. It’s like when the projector processes the video in any meaningful way, the audio is off.
Optoma suggested changing the HDMI cable or bypassing my receiver, but neither option worked. I doubt it’s a hardware issue, but they want me to send it in for repair and who knows when I’d get it back if I did.

Thirdly, it takes much longer than I thought to boot up. I was lead to believe in a review of the projector that since it has a laser light source, it will be really quick to start up and display an image. That is not the case. It takes just as long to boot up and display a usable image as my 10+ year old bulb projector (around 30 seconds).

On the plus side, it has a bright image, and decent HDR with the lights off (I haven’t calibrated anything). I don’t have any other 4k/HDR projectors to compare it to, but it looks good to me. The reviews from pros seem to indicate the same.

It’s too bad the picture quality is overshadowed by all the other major flaws.

So, just barely out of the 1-year warranty and my projector seems to have developed chickenpox. Seriously. Now 10 dead pixels are scattered about the screen. So furious. I paid $3,000 for this projector and it only has a 1 year warranty? Optoma support tells me I have to pay to ship it to them, then pay an evaluation fee and then pay $500 for a redesigned DMD chip to fix the problem. They know the DMD chip is defective and they had a new one produced, but the folks that paid good money up front are now screwed. Seriously, folks, this is what you get with Optoma Support. Basically nothing. They know this is a defective part in this unit and they should be willing to replace it at no charge regardless if the warranty is out or now. It’s not like this unit failed from abuse or long hours. Just a crappy product backed by an even crappier company. DO NOT BUY FROM THESE GUYS. THEY DO NOT DESERVE YOUR BUSINESS. This was the 5th projector I have owned and Optoma has lost a lifelong customer here.

Waited awhile to use it before my review. This projector is great, super bright, clear image, no issues so far. Even though no wifi, it still powers on and off with Alexa and FireTV Cube. I’m very happy with this projector !

We are absolutely thrilled with the Optoma UHZ45 projector!

The 4K UHD resolution delivers incredibly crisp and vibrant images with exceptional clarity. It’s like having a cinema in your living room!

One of the standout features for me is the enhanced gaming mode. It takes gaming to the next level with a lightning-fast 16.7ms response time in 4K at 60Hz and an impressive 4ms in 1080p at 240Hz. Gamers, you’re in for a treat!

The projector is packed with the latest technology, including HDR and HLG compatibility, three HDMI 2.0 inputs, and Full 3D support. Plus, the integrated speaker is a nice bonus.

What really sets the UHZ45 apart is its laser technology. As per the specs, I read it offers 30,000-hour maintenance-free laser light source, I hope I can enjoy hours of entertainment worry-free. (Will update if required) The color accuracy is exceptional, and the dynamic contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 truly enhances the visual experience.

I can confidently say that the Optoma UHZ45 has exceeded my expectations, and I’m thoroughly enjoying recreating the big-screen experience at home. It’s a fantastic investment for any home theater enthusiast or gamer. Highly recommended!”
