If you’ve ever owned a Peak Design Capture Clip, you’re going to want this to replace the v1 or v2 version you currently own. if you don’t, once you’ve figured out its purpose and have seen the photos, you’ll want this on your bag.

Maybe you like the extra weight a DSLR or large mirrorless camera around your neck and how it makes you look like a tourist. Maybe you prefer to sling it over your shoulder so you can worry about every doorframe you might crash it into upon walking through one. If neither sounds like you, this is one of the best ways to carry your camera. Attach the clip to your backpack or messenger bag strap, the ARCA-style adapter plate to your camera’s tripod receptacle, and boom… you can now easily carry your camera in a far better position on your person. Hell, you can even attach it to your belt and look like a wild west Ansel Adams.

While the previous versions are perfectly serviceable, this latest version looks like the designers took Jony Ive 101 at Bay Area Community College. Clean lines with no sharp edges, uniform color and a more reliably grippy back plate and a monochrome palette in two colors: black (aka gray) and white (aka silver). The lower profile thumbscrews take a slight step backward in functionality compared to previous versions but they include high tension hex head screws for a more permanent install, should you choose that route. Also included is a decal, hex key and a nicely constructed, drawstring carry bag.

This is what they “Kickstarted” a month ago for a week so they could be produced and shipped before xmas. Now that we’re past the holiday, they are up for sale to the general public.

The Capture Clip v3 continues the run of excellent redesigns Peak Design has been doing this year, following the equally excellent Leash v2, Cuff v2, Slide Lite v2 and Slide v2 all featuring smart changes, efficient design and tasteful color options. Even the ARCA-style adapter plate (sold separately or as a combo package) has been changed, with a lower profile and stronger construction. And just in case you’re unsure, all of the previous PD adapter plates work with version 3, no exceptions.

Buy it now. You know you need it.

Have no doubt about it, this product is the best of its kind. It is an example of excellent design and engineering. It is extremely easy to use and the Peak Design plate slips beautifully into the clip, making it 100% secure. The tolerances in its construction also make it simple to lock/unlock and withdraw one’s camera from the clip. Other makers have similar products that sometimes stick a little when one tries to access the camera and the shot can be missed because of that, but it doesn’t happen with Peak Design’s Capture Clip.

The big question though is whether this clip is worth five or six times the prices of some of the copycat items available to buy on the web? I have owned some of them, and they do work. However, they don’t work with the same sort of precision and ease as the Peak Design version. If you have spent £2-3K on a camera and lens, you no doubt appreciate the best of design and construction. Therefore, you will probably remember the quality of this product long after you have forgotten how much you had to pay for it.

I had heard Peak Design created some well loved/rated photography bags, mounts and straps, and I really liked the idea of mounting my camera to the shoulder strap on my backpack. So, I thought I’d try the Capture Camera Clip V3 Solo out.

It’s a tight fit on my Lowepro backpack (wide straps), but it mounts securely and compresses the strap cushioning for a perfectly flush fit on the backside (shoulder facing side) of the strap. Even with a fully loaded pack, I can’t feel the back of the plate against my chest/shoulder. It’s very comfortable and I don’t even know it’s there, other than the weight of the camera.
Clipping the camera in is dead simple…slide it in until it clicks. Removing it is just as easy. I had read a few complaints about difficulties pressing the safety release while removing the camera (some saying it requires two hand), but I had no such issue. I have big hands and as I grab the camera grip with my fingers, I can easily press the release with my thumb. It all happens in one smooth motion using only my right hand.

For reference, I purchased Camera Clip V3 Solo (clip only version), along with the Peak Design Dual Plate V2. I have Manfrotto tripods and heads with RC2 mounts, so this Dual Plate works with both the Clip and my tripod heads. The Dual Plate works perfectly with the V3 clip and also well with the RC2 Manfrotto heads.

    Now for a quick testimonial…
Yesterday I went for a hike/climb on some rocky terrain and had my Sony A7 with the 12-24mm lens (heavy) locked into the clip. I took a hard fall going over a boulder and was able to catch myself, somewhat, by my forearms and sort of tuck and roll. It was a violent impact (says my arms and shoulders), but the clip held fast and saved an expensive lens. I can only imagine what would have happen to either the camera or lens if I had used a neck or should strap instead of this. I’m sold on this clip mount, and highly recommend it…especially if you’re an active outdoors hiker/photographer.

I own many other Peak Design products, but this was my first Capture Clip, and I will say that this one is great. It pairs extremely well with the new dual plate (I bought one on Amazon, but it looks like they have removed it, you will need to get it from somewhere else).

    Pros:
    – While I haven’t owned the older versions, it definitely looks smaller and a lot more slick, definitely the best looking of the versions.
    – Built out of metal, and feels very sturdy
    – With the dual plate, very easy to get in and out and holds very secure (no wiggle room). I used it on my backpack strap with a Sony A7RIII and the heavy 24-70mm GM and actually went ahead and jumped up and down with this. While the lens beat me in the chest, the clip held up and I would say that even with it unlocked, it probably wouldn’t be able to fall out since this new design can only slide in from the top.

    Cons:
    – I would maybe recommend a little bit of oil or grease on the screws since there seems to be a lot of metal rubbing (screeching) when you are tightening it down.
    – Again, I can’t confirm, but it seems like using one hand to get the camera in and out is not so easy. I think it has something to do with the angle of the release button. In the picture, you can see both v2 and v3 side by side. Notice that v2’s button is slightly angled upward, which probably makes it less awkward to press, since it’s not behind the camera body. However, Peak Design has said that the design of v3 does also prevent accidental button presses, which may be reason for the change.

    Conclusion:
There really isn’t anything else like this out there, and I can already tell you that I liked this so much that I went out and bought another one for my second camera bag. I didn’t like the limitations that the old plate design put on my camera, but with the new dual plate, this was a no brainer. I highly recommend the dual plate with this, you will be able to use one plate with both ARCA and Manfrotto systems, and still use Capture!

You are paying a premium for this but this clip works beautifully. I have this attached to my backpack shoulder strap. It’s a really well build piece of gear and I truly enjoy using it. Keep in mind you also need to buy the Peak Design camera plate (that’s compatible with your camera and/or tripod) for this to work.
