I don’t hate the filter, it’s better than others when it works. First one we got worked for a week and was doing well keeping the tank clean. It seemed like a nice unit, was quiet, and I was planning to get another for a 2nd tank. But then the impeller stopped. If I proceeded to disassemble and then reassemble the impeller it would turn for maybe 5 seconds and then freeze up again. I think something must be wrong with the coil? Before writing this review I got a replacement unit through Amazon (easy system, no complaints) and that unit arrived today and had the same problem right out of the box. Maybe the 3rd one will work? I’d like it to, it’s a better design than the others I’ve tried.

I like this filter. It fit nicely in my 5 gallon betta tank. I like that the spray bar stays submerged and you can adjust the flow. Did not come with bio media. Only came with a piece of sponge. It does make a very slight rattling noise but doesn’t bother me too much. I’m not crazy about the colour being blue, would of better better if it was black but I was able to hide it with a plant in front of it. Overall so far so good.

If there’s have a zero star, I would give it a zero star.
I received this yesterday, but I didn’t have a chance to opened it’s. The next morning I opened it up, and see it’s kinda of small then what I think, so might of trying out. After cleaning it up, put it into my fish’s tank, the tube that blows the water out, it’s just popped out, so I unplugged the power, and take it out, put the tube back in. It’s came out against, so now I might have to used like that, I DON’T WANT TO CALLED IN TO THE COSTUMERS SERVICE TO GET IT’S REPLACEMENT, BECAUSE OF CONVID-19 GOING AROUND, AND IT’S WOULD TAKE A WHILE FOR ME TO GET A NEW ONE!!!! SO I DON’T RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE IN MY FAMILY OR MY FRIENDS.

I set out to find a submergible filter. I was going to go with the Tetra/Aqueon filters (pretty just same design as each other) but some of the reviews said their fish got sucked in the filter.. so I did not want to go with that.
I found this one and it was really cheap, so I got it. If it didn’t work I would just use it until I could pick a good one. But so far so good! There is no complicated set up it’s extremely self-explanatory. It comes with one foam insert and one charcoal, but I used the ones from my previous filter because I know those work really well. I had to cut open the charcoal bag and get rid of some so it would fit in the compartment.
I plugged in the filter and it seems to be okay! I turned the flow bar towards the tank wall so there isn’t any water flow noise. The filter has a bit of a rumble sound which is kind of annoying and I worry it bothers my frog, I might angle the water to gently hit the surface to mask the rumble noise.

Update: I removed the filter. The rumble noise began so loud I had to shut it off at night. It had a high water flow rate, but I never saw it pick up any debris inside the tank… it only sucked up water.
I got the Fluval 2 filter instead, and I highly recommend that one. It’s extremely quiet and working very good. It’s not that much more expensive also.

This is a great filter for small (nano) applications. Mine is currently installed in a custom built 8 gal Betta biotope.

The included filter media (charcoal and sponge) is not meant as a long term solution, but can be easily added to given the build of the filter as the ‘trays’ snap apart. I was a little surprised by the design when I opened the box. While I had seen the inlet vents on the filter image, I was unaware how it would actually work. The inlet vents are built in such a way that water entering the canister can completely bypass the filter media!

Since I was replacing a Fluval internal filter that stopped working in less then 2 months, I did already have cycles filter media I could use and add to this filter. What I did was cut the primary sponges from the old filter and slid them into the small inlet chambers on the new filter.I replaced the coarse sponge in the bottom tray with my cycled sponges and topped off with cycled ceramic. In the top try I added the carbon bag and topped off with a fine filter floss. This turns the filter into a full MCB filter (mechanical/chemical/biological). Even with all of the modifications, the filter is performing great and the flow is perfect for my setup.

This filter is amazing! I am using it in a small tank for a tiny red earred slider turtle. I was previously using a standard fish aquarium filter and was having to clean this tank (which only has about 3 gallons of water in it) constantly. Once I installed this filter I didn’t have to clean this tank for nearly two months. I occasionaly add water to the tank when it evaporates but the water stays crystal clear without constant cleaning. And the best part is that it is completely SILENT! The tank is in my son’s bedroom and the waterfall style of the previous filter was so loud and annoying I could hear it from the next room. I have this one placed on its side with the spray bar down and pointed at the floor of the aquarium so the floor stays really clean. I know very little about aquarium maintenance. I bought my son this turtle thinking it would be a fun and simple pet for him. I was wrong, there’s way more upkeep than I realized. I was about to give up and find a new home for it. The simple purchase of this filter changed everything. I highly recommend!

Seriously, if you have a messy tank GET THIS FILTER. I have two RES turtles who are messy boys. The filter that came with their tank was the kind that hangs over the edge and was really annoying to constantly listen to the waterfall at all times and it did a terrible, terrible job at actually filtering. This submersible filter does wonders and its so quiet!! I have it laying on its side instead of vertical and it does a great job. I’ve only had it for about 2 weeks and I have just had to change the filter, something that I would’ve had to do 2ce by now in the old Aqua filter. I am actually ordering a second one of these to go on the other side of the tank because their food settles between the substrate (rocks) we have and while the filter does a good job on one end of the tank, it doesn’t seem to reach the other side, so I will have 2 on either sides which will also hopefully reduce the amount of changes of the filter I’ll need to do. Also, I recommend buying the replacement filters in bulk — you will need TWO KINDS. One is like a spongy material that goes in the bottom half and the other is a bag of rocks that goes in the top half. This is what I bought and works great: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V0KR5RK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you’re buying this for a fish tank you should have no problems… but if youre like me and you have two RES you may want to consider either going up size (I ordered the 325) or get two… our water level is too low for the larger ones so two small ones works perfect for us. Enjoy! 🙂

As others have stated, it is a bit of a poor design with those gill like openings on the upper and lower chambers, water will take the path of least resistance and therefore be taken almost completely from the upper chamber, inside the chambers there is a plastic ridge that runs to the top that makes almost all of the water entering bypass all the media if you don’t modify it. I stuffed plastic sandwich bags between the inner ridges and openings of the upper chamber so water is forced from the lower one (you could also block them with aquarium silicone for a more permanent fix), the bottom of the upper chamber is well designed with good venting on the bottom and a small chemipure fits perfectly in the upper chamber. The lower chamber also has those annoying inner ridges that cause most of the water to bypass the sponge, (might be a good idea to cut that inner ridge out), but the sponge is t-shaped so it does filter a bit and with the upper inlets blocked water flows nicely through the chemipure in the upper chamber. I used this in a large Rubbermaid container to transport aquatic animals from Nova Scotia to Ontario and they arrived happy and healthy, another minor issue is the little suction cups weren’t strong enough to secure the filter, especially in a vehicle, so it did end up on the bottom, but with the sprayer pointed up it did circulate the water well and I also had a air pump with a air stone airating the water. FYI, this ran perfectly in my suv with a basic $20 cigarette lighter power inverter that ran both this filter and the air pump.
