*** Update 4/7/15: Sadly, this bird feeder is made out of plastic. 100% plastic. The other day I was refilling it and putting it back up and the two sides split open (which is where the plastic hanger is wedged), dropping it to the concrete porch and smashing one of the ports. Seed and broken plastic everywhere. I owned this feeder for less than one year. It did teach me, however, that I enjoy watching the birds – so we bought a metal one and a simple hook to replace this one. I still like this feeder, but it is only worth the $5 Amazon has it listed for. Perhaps if you are unsure about your interest in bird watching – this is a great little starter (just don’t plan on it being the last one you buy). Be warned.

I live year round in a heavily wooded campground. I love the wild birds and spend a lot of money on expensive wild bird blends but mostly what I do is watch the squirrels rob my feeders. The squirrels are everywhere and no squirrel proof feeder I’ve tried (and that is several) has had any success in deterring the squirrels. They can defeat any feeder. Or so I thought until I bought this Perky-Pet 3261 a couple weeks ago. The 6 ports on this feeder are adjustable. They can be closed for feeding thistle or left open for larger seeds such as sunflower. The birds can and do easily perch and eat from the open ports. The perches are short but even birds as large as cardinals have no problem feeding. Countless squirrels have climbed the shepherd’s hook and tried every way they can think of to get on the cylinder shaped feeder only to be discouraged and climb back down. A couple have jumped to the feeder but with nothing but those short pegs to grasp they can’t hold on and fall to the ground. They still try but none has succeeded. For one of the less expensive feeders on the market this one can’t be beat for feeding your wild birds and not the squirrels. I highly recommend this feeder and will be ordering a couple more today. Amazon you have a real winner here.

The Perky-Pet Sierra Wild Bird and Finch Feeder is a two-in-one feeder, allowing you to decide what type of bird feed you want to fill it with. Something I have seen rarely in the past, this feeder has small doors on the sides, allowing you to “close them” when you fill the feeder with thistle, while “opening” the doors when you fill it with larger feeds. This makes the feeder multi-functional, and is a very neat future.
Like most bird feeders, this one is made of relatively flimsy plastic and this is very noticeable. While most birds should have no problem eating from this feeder, larger birds (or squirrels and other animals, if they find the feeder) may break the standing pegs on the sides or even pull the entire feeder off the top handle. As it appears, the hanging handle at the top is very thin as well, and does not take much force to disconnect from the entire feeder.
Additionally, the little “doors” as I described them above are connected to the feeder only by small holes in the plastic feeder on the sides. Therefore, it is very easy for them to pop in and out, which can be positive but also negative. A few of the “doors” actually fell out of my feeder during shipment, showing how easily they can pop out of the main plastic feeder.
Overall, I give this item 4 stars; if it was made of a more durable plastic or other material, I would bump it up to 5 stars. However, I do not see this feeder lasting beyond one season based on it’s lack of durability.

I had the bird feeder up less than a week and the hanger broke, the bird feeder fell off the hook and cracked in several places. It’s spilled the seed all over the place. The birds didn’t even have a chance to use it. Would not recommend even though it is cute.

This feeder is a great value and the birds love it. I bought this to be a thistle feeder and so far it has been working really well. It is plastic so don’t expect it to be super heavy duty. However, as long as you aren’t being abnormally rough with it and don’t have super aggressive animals raiding your feeder this should last for quite awhile. It looks nice, it’s easy to fill, and it is made well. I will probably order a second one when I need to replace another birdfeeder.
