This feeder works well for small birds, who arrived within an hour of putting it up. It is harder for larger birds, like scrub jays, because the perch is so close to the seed hole that the scrub jays have problems getting their head to the hole, unless they hang off the perch like they are doing chin-ups. I’m really enjoying watching them all, and they are enjoying eating from it.
Because of the basket-like guards, you can’t fill it with seed that is too big, or the birds won’t be able to get it out. I filled it with Kaytee Birders’ Blend, and there is a lot of seed scatter.
Smaller seeds do fall out of the vertically mounted grid-like guards, both when filling it, and when it is being used. It would be better if these guards had a solid section towards the bottom to prevent all this seed scattering. (On the other hand, seed falling out of it helps other birds eat off the ground. 🙂 I have no idea why they claim that it “Eliminates seed scattering”, because it doesn’t — simply testing it would have revealed it (hence 3 stars, otherwise I would have ranked it higher). I think next time I fill it, I may put something solid like Sugru to fill in the leaky lower grids to try to fix this problem.
I mounted it on a tree branch where my squirrels like to hang out, but haven’t seen any of them try to eat out of it yet — probably because they are getting plenty of seeds off the deck and ground, due to the bad design of the so-called seed guards.
Also, the materials are mostly lightweight plastic — I don’t know how long they will last outdoors. However, it is mostly in shade so hopefully the UV damage won’t happen too fast. It looks nice and is fun, I hope it lasts a long time.

The Feeder Specifications clearly state “all metal and glass”. That’s a lie. There is no glass, the tube itself is super-thin plastic. So thin that during shipping it apparently flexed and the metal covers where the birds pick out the seeds fell off. I just flexed the flimsy plastic tube a little and inserted the metal tabs back into the tube, but the reason I purchase it was because squirrels chewed through the plastic tube on my other feeder, and this one was advertised as all metal and glass. Oh by the way, it didn’t even come in a product box, it was just wrapped in bubble-wrap and thrown into an Amazon box.

Actually 3 – 4 stars. This is super easy to fill and take apart. Holds a good amount of seed. The perches are short..no white wing doves able to sit on them. What bothers me is that the really small seed like millet falls out easily and that is a favorite seed for so many. Also, when you are filling the tube you are losing seed at the same time so I do it right out at the feeder
This is really more like 4 + 1/2 **** but I want to see how well the tube its self holds up. Very easy to fill from the top..you do lose some seed through the ports, especially the millet so I wouldn’t use just that. I have some milo, millet, black sunflower seed, cracked corn pieces, a bit of shelled peanuts in mine. The bigger pieces the birds just keep working on and get out eventually. The perches are short, won’t hold any white wing doves that are around. The squirrels climb down the chain and hang upside down trying to reach the topmost ports but all the ports have metal “umbrellas” over the tops of the holes. Seed gets shaken to the ground but at least the squirrels aren’t sitting there looking at me while they eat all expensive food!!

Second Update: A week after my first update, I went out to refill the feeder since it was getting empty. There were blobs of mold in the lower half, even in the nooks and crannies. We’d had a few rainstorms and water had gotten in – I feel so badly the birds were eating out of a moldy feeder. So, I would like to inform you that this tube feeder isn’t weatherproof and is best used in a sheltered location, perhaps under an eave. Also, if mold does form in it, it will be a pain to clean out, so I ended up throwing it away.
First Update: A week after my original review, birds started coming to the feeder, and in just a couple days, 25% of the seed is gone, so they seem to like it now. Just took them a LONG time to warm up to it, like 5 weeks. Squirrels still pay it no mind… there are squirrels going up and down the trees all around the feeder, but they haven’t bothered this bird feeder.

I’ve had this hanging up for a month. Squirrels don’t touch this feeder, but birds as well also avoid it. (My shepherd’s hook is in a good spot, birds have come to the other feeders I’ve had hanging from it.) I’m surprised the raccoons haven’t bothered it either. I have a game camera aimed at it, and deer come over every night to see if anything good fell from the feeder.
I have black oil sunflower seeds in this feeder, but they seem to be too big for the openings on this bird feeder. Birds have to concentrate and work hard while having their back turned to the world, and they don’t like that. I’ve only had a few birds visit this feeder. I first tried millet but that just poured out of the openings. Much easier for the birds to get, but the feeder would have been emptied quickly just from spillage from every little breeze. Perhaps sunflower hearts would work better but I’m afraid I can’t justify the cost of hearts over black oil.
I’m about to take it down and put my Perky Pet No/No red seed ball back up.
