Used this on a Conn 8D and was pretty disappointed, but for the price it was worth giving it a shot. There was a LOT of resistance in the low register (starting at middle C and getting progressively worse as it went lower) and minor resistance in the higher range (F to high C). It didn’t make it much quieter, although there was a difference. The difference however was so minor compared to a good straight mute that it felt silly. In addition, it’s horribly out of tune. It’s akin to playing with your hand completely removed from the bell or playing with the bell off.
Overall, if you need something to warm up in a hotel room, then go for it, but I wouldn’t mess with it as something to do late night practicing.

Not quite as soft as my Sshh mute but noticably less resistance. I can practice with it downstairs without waking up sleepers upstairs. Both of these mutes beat the stone lined practice mute I used to use, which had so much resistance I ended up drilling some holes in it. I would have given it 5 stars but it raises the pitch of both of my horns by 1/4 tone, so if I am using a tuner I have to pull the slides out all the way.

I use this mute for warmups at rehearsals and gigs. Does a great job of quieting the horn. Has good time quality through the majority of the Horn’s range. Extreme ends, as to be expected, are difficult to play, and tone does suffer a bit. This is normal, but a bit more pronounced on this compared to the Dennis Wick series of practice mutes. Only reason I gave 4/5 stars was because I use DW mutes at home.

Wanted a really quiet practice mute so as not to disturb neighbors. I heard it used in a trombone and it worked great – extremely quiet! However, I didn’t get the same results with my Conn 8D French Horn.
Amazon Customer –
An amazing sounding mute that controls easily. Free blowing in all but the very lowest notes (Pedal F and downwards), compact and fits snugly inside bell when in case. Would highly recommend!
Liz Wagner –
It works perfectly for warming up for rehearsals. Since I live in an apartment now, it works perfectly for not disturbing my neighbors or anything
Murray W. Cuthbert –
Minor tuning problems, but comparatively a good price. It does what it is supposed to do!!
Joshua Romer –
I was making a gamble when getting this, but it seems I’ve struck gold. Though many people say it’s poorly made, I’ll say that for the price, I got what I wanted out of it, and can say it fits in my marching French horn as well!
JStockton –
Compact, light and effective. It does have a small problem sticking in the bell, but this can be rectified with a little moisture applied to the cork.
Peter Minton –
I can finally practice in my apartment without bothering the neighbors. Fits the horn perfectly and plays well.

I moved into a dorm for my freshman year at school and needed a mute that wouldn’t ruin my tone while not getting me noise complaints. On top of it doing it’s job properly, it is incredibly light! My only complaint would be that the upper register is a little harder to hit with it in, but I can excuse that as it’s to be expected with a mute. For it’s price point it’s a definite buy!
