The oboe is gorgeous. But many of the notes wouldn’t play. Took it to a music store and spent a little over a hundred dollars to repair it. Now, it’s perfect.

If your kid has no ambitions of playing oboe past middle or high school this is a great oboe. With all instruments you get what you payed for. If it’s a 300$ trumpet it will play and sound like one. This rule is only amplified in the woodwind world. Don’t expect a lot out of this instrument. It lacks several keys that would make this a true β€œprofessional” grade level horn and that is just on the surface level from what I can see. Usually cheap instruments have cheap pads metal plates and material so buyer beware and do your research. Yamaha is your safest bet if you don’t want to do research they’re not good but they’re not bad and the price point is average. You pay for what you get.

I’m a very experienced single-reed player (clarinet, alto, soprano and tenor saxophone). I want to try oboe without making a huge investment in an instrument. After much research and consultation with colleagues, I decided that it was worth the risk to try this low-end instrument. BUT this oboe is very impressive for its modest cost. The build quality seems solid. Once I get some control over a double reed, it probably will have a solid sound, too!

Another reviewer commented that the instrument would not play until he had a music store technician work on it. In my experience, I’ve had to adjust instruments that were set up by the techs at the music store, anyway. This oboe was almost playable right out of the box. I’ve only had to adjust one spring and very slightly straighten one key that was rubbing another key. I’m sure that more adjustments will be necessary, but so far it’s okay. Hey! I have to make adjustments to my $4500 Buffet R13 clarinet all the time, but then it gets a lot of use.

Another reviewer commented that they got the swab stuck in the instrument. DUH! The swab can’t be pulled through the reed holder. The swab is supplied with pulls on both ends: the swab is pulled gently through the reed holder, then back out through the bell. Hopefully that advice helps someone else.

This oboe was supplied with several polishing clothes, neck strap and a jeweler’s screwdriver, nice touches that don’t cost much be weren’t necessary. The manufacturer seems to care.

Anyway, considering that a mainstream entry level oboe can cost twice this much, I think this will do nicely as a starter instrument.
