The SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD drive provides a reliable, secure, and portable backup for my Apple MacBook laptop. How devastating it would be if the laptop were damaged or stolen. How much is your DATA or your FAMILY PHOTOS worth? For me, this add-on drive is cheap insurance. It’s fast, secure, and takes up very little space. I highly recommend this product.

The design of the SSD is sleek and modern, and it includes practical elements like a carabiner loop for secure attachment. The 500GB capacity hits a sweet spot, providing ample storage for most tasks without the need for unnecessary extra space. Finally, considering its array of features and overall performance, the SSD stands out as a good value for money, making it a solid choice for professionals or anyone in need of reliable, fast external storage. As a content creator I alway struggle with storage because I film strictly from my iPhone but when I saw this external hard drive and read the comments about it I know it’s going to be a very good drive. I wanted the 2 TB but I could not afford at the time but this 1 TB seems like a 2 TB lol . It holds a lot of files and it transfer files quickly! Great value for your money, it’s also easy to use compatible with USB C-A adapter and it performs well. Great buy.

In my opinion, one of the best SSDs, but it has a pretty short and tough cable and it warms.

This drive is fast and a good value, but after 6 months, I can say that it’s rather finicky on a Mac. So I’m reducing my rating to 4 stars.

My first issue was that the drive became unrecognizable on my MacBook Pro M1. The Mac couldn’t see the drive in Disk Utility or give any sign that the drive existed at all. Even more bizarre, when I plugged it into three other Macs, it worked fine. Eventually, I figured out that it was because I wasn’t using the original cable that came with it, which I think is perhaps a lightning cable or something, which apparently my MacBook Pro M1 really wanted. But to work on 3 other macs just fine with a regular USB-C cable? Bizarre. So there was quirk number one.

Later on, when encrypting the drive, I either unplugged it too soon, or the operating system didn’t unmount it properly, and the drive became corrupted and this time, though showing up in DiskUtility, couldn’t be formatted or partitioned without failing with a strange error each time. Others on the internet who had this issue said they ultimately had to return the drive for a new one. I was about to return mine too, but then as a last-ditch effort, I borrowed a Windows 11 machine, which recognized the drive no problem. So I re-partitioned it there, and then brought it back to my Mac, where Disk Utility was happy to deal with it again.

The third quirk is that often, my Mac refuses to eject the drive. Ventura, and Sonoma before it, almost always says the drive is in use, even when every program is closed. Spotlight isn’t indexing it. Maybe it’s because I have my primary Photos Library on it and it’s doing something in the background? But it’s not obvious, and I have to shut-down my computer almost every time to eject this disk. I’ll have to put more time into researching active processes to see what the deal is, but I just don’t have this issue with my other external drives. So again, Sandisk and Apple need to coordinate on this.

So while I’d love to give this drive five stars, all these quirks on the Mac have wasted a lot of my time. And SanDisk (Western Digital) needs to really take a look at some of the compatibility issues with Mac and update the firmware / drivers on this.
