Addressing the elephant in the room, this external requires its own power supply, it cannot simply run off of being connected to a computer. As uncommon as that is today, you should know it before purchasing and if thatโs a deal breaker then you need a different external device. If thatโs not an issue for you then I would highly recommend this drive. For me, the only limitation is bringing this drive in the field or maybe using It at an airport, which I personally wouldnโt do anyway. Itโs not inconvenient to bring it from home to the office or using it in a hotel and even a lot of coffee shops have plugs near tables today. It simply depends on where you are going to need to use it.
I use the 8tb with my MacBook Pro to house all of my 100K+ image library for Lightroom and Photoshop work. For the past several years I have shot with a Sony a7R III and Canon R5, both produce large raw files and editing them through this drive, especially complex edits, has been much faster than my prior drives. I do not do any video work, so I cannot speak to how well it would perform, but I would expect very well. The drive is responsive and fast, and (fortunately) I have not suffered from any connection issues. For a โportableโ ssd it is on the chunky side, definitely not pocketable, but when sitting on my desk or a hotel bedside table I wouldnโt consider it oversized or inconvenient. I do think it is a bit too pricey, but currently, the options for an 8tb external ssd are limited. If you need (or just want) a large capacity external ssd I would highly recommend this drive, especially if you are considering using it as I do, to carry an image library and run edits through it.

Immediately reformatted for APFS and transferred close to 4tb of data from my RAID. Did it in spurts but transfer via USB 3 was fast. No disconnects as ithers have reported. Blackmagic Disk Speed test at or about advertised speed. Fast! Reason for 4 stars is that even not in use but connected to MacPro it runs hot. That gives me ling term concerns.

Who makes drives with power adapter in 2024? All of the external SSD drives that I saw, none of them have power adapter, but ok I thought, I use it on my desk and maybe it would be more reliable, NOPE!
Drive gets very HOT, but then it would disconnect. WHAT? I though it was a fluke, so I kept it
Since the work I do requires me to work on large files and my MAC doesn’t have enough space, I work directly on the drive.
Second time it disconnected, the whole drive got corrupted. I see the partition, it is greyed out and it is not mounting, I’m pressing the button, but nothing happens. Lost 4 days of work for NO reason
Just stay away, it is not worth it

More than enough capacity for complete home office. Am using as a primary storage for documents/pictures/music with iDrive for backup but could see it used as a high-capacity backup drive. Decided to stop using OneDrive and Google Drive and easily accommodated what I had on those services. No lag issues with drive access. Runs a little bit hot. No noise whatsoever.

Wow! I have large directories of photos that I work with, and this SSD is as FAST as advertised. Files flash by – no watching the progress bar. It’s small, but doesn’t have a light to indicate on/off read/write. If you can afford it, get it! I did have initial problems with formatting the drive in APFS. SanDisk tech support offered a free replacement (and it was still in the Amazon return window), but during a subsequent session with them (quick & helpful), I was magically able to format in APFS. Don’t know why this failed when I first attempted.
