I recently got into the heated gear craze. I recently adopted a little black German Shepherd Dog and decided to get myself back into search and rescue. It’s been several years, so I’m missing gear, of course. Or the gear doesn’t fit, or in too poor of shape. Whatever the reason, I’m accumulating new gear. With SAR you often spend a lot of time standing in one place, which, when it’s cold, makes the cold hit you harder. You aren’t moving around and generating heat. Heated gear really helps this. If you layer it just right you won’t need the heating pads when you’re moving around, but you can fire them up if you’re resting. I’ve found that walking/playing frisbee with my dog is so much more pleasant when you aren’t freezing.
A lot of build up to say I really like heated gear. However, my two high-vis jackets both use a non-USB connector for the batteries, which is really inconvenient. I carry multiple power banks with me, so being able to use a regular USB A or C means I have potentially days of heating power available. When I saw there was already an adaptor to make this happen I jumped on it.
This thing works! My jacket, which runs on 12v, can now use any of my power banks to work. Tested and sure. There’s even a little LCD display on the cable that shows that it’s operating at 12v. Not sure why this is needed, but I’m not complaining about extra functions on my toys.
Overall I’m thrilled with this adaptor. It’s a very cheap way to expand your heating options significantly. I highly recommend!

I use 12v heated riding gear on my motorcycle. I was so excited about the idea of powering it up off the bike. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with my warm-and-safe apparel. The power pack shows the gear pulling up to 2.5 amps when I turn on the controller and then it drops down to 0 and never goes back up again. I tried using it on my old Gerbing jacket liner and Gerbing controller and it works great. So I don’t know what the issue is exactly but it doesn’t seem to work with all 12v gear.

The Good:
+ Uses USB-C PD protocol to request 12v from battery pack. (I don’t think it’s a step-up converter. It requests 12v, and the battery pack delivers 12vdc.)
+ Confirms 12v with LED. My battery pack confirmed it was sending 12v.
+ Should work to power all sorts of 12vdc devices. Might be a good emergency power solution for 12v ham radios or field recorders. Toss one in your emergency bag.
The Bad:
– Might have a small phantom load to power the LED. My auto-off powerbanks won’t turn off automatically when the jacket is turned off.
This is a useful device for getting 12v from a USB-C. It does the negotiating so you don’t have to. One note: 12v is an optional voltage for PD devices… not all PD powerbanks can deliver it.
Highly recommended for its usefulness.

Winter is coming and it is time to break out my Milwaukee heated jacket. I saw these power adapter cables online and figured I would give one a try to see how they work. The cable works fine to transfer power from a USB power pack to the jacket. I have two very high end, Anker brand power packs, a 20000 and 10000 Mah. For me I found good brand name power banks are not cheap, neither are Milwaukee batteries, but I own a lot of M12 tools and have a bunch of batteries. My 20000 Mah power pack lasted a little longer than one 2.0 Milwaukee battery. It is a good concept, the item works as it should, my work better for some but I personally am just going back to carrying a few extra factory batteries with me. I have an M18 / M12 fast charger in my vehicle so keeping up with factory batteries is not an issue plus I feel more comfortable that my jacket is designed to work with my factory batteries. I rated the adapter cable at 5 stars because it does work.

Thumbs up: Let’s you connect USB C PD-enabled power banks to 12v clothes
THE GOOD:
1. The converter is pretty small – just the cable and a small in-line box for the transformer and aan LED display – see pictures.
2. Easy to use – just plug it in. The 12v LED light will illuminate once it is plugged into a power bank.
THE BAD:
1. The barrel connector was too big for either of my 12v jackets so had to get a connector cable.
2. Will have to see how this model works as I have had issues with other Smarkey heated clothing transformers in the recent past.
