I could not adjust the FB floorboard at the angle I needed.

Quite satisfied, actually. If you like the feel of a longboard pedal like the chain drive Speed Cobra, you will probably like TAMA’s take on the direct drive concept.

It doesn’t have the manufacturing refinement of a Trick Pro-1V or a DW MDD, but it has a light, smooth feel, and the contoured felt beater gives plenty of power. There is a connectedness to direct drive that I really like. No “footboard floating” when doing doubles. The footboard height quick adjustment setting does indeed change the balance, and I really liked having that flexibility. Likewise with the variable cam slider. I’m able to do heel toe, slide, and pivot techniques with ease, right out of the box. Plus, you can disconnect the spring, for quick travel, or to practice without it. Few direct drives offer that option. And, comes with a decent hard case.

James Payne has two videos online describing how to set the pedal up for different styles, and he explains the footboard adjustment settings & what they do.

Great pedal, but I hate the longboard. It just feels like too much effort. If you’re into longboard pedals, though, I’d give this one a shot. Other downsides are; No independent beater angle adjustment; stupid spring underneath the footboard; generally feels cumbersome.

Tama has created another masterpiece embodied by the simple efficacy of this direct drive pedal. It’s a great first direct drive pedal because the adjustments are all quick and intuitive. However, they say this pedal doesn’t sacrifice the power of a chain drive too much but I noticed the power difference immediately. I can still use it for a loud rock gig but I still prefer the power of my chain-driven Iron Cobra 900. The Dyna-Sync is a pleasure to play because it is incredibly smooth and I can feel the immediacy of the direct drive. I will definitely make great use of it for lower volume gigs such as country or jazz because the touch is incredible and the quick cam adjustment is really fun to experiment with. It might also work really well with my electronic drum set. However, if I get another direct drive pedal, I will probably try the Darwin FTW pedal since it can adjust how close to the head it gets and it comes with an alternative strap drive which is supposed to better mediate the power of the chain with the speed of the direct drive.

So, I’m an Axis/Pearl guy. I absolutely love my Axis X-Longboards and my Pearl Eliminators, which are the main pedals I’ve been using live and in the studio for 15 years now. But these new Tama Dyna Sync’s are something else. Tama pedals (in my very humble opinion) have always been awful. I always found them to be super slow, heavy and sluggish…especially compared with anything Axis or Pearl. But these are fantastic, they’re incredibly smooth and they hit the kick nice and hard. I get better volume at 250 bpm with these than any other pedal I’ve played. Definitely glad I bought them, they might be my new live pedals!
