I’ve been a Tivo user for fifteen years, but up until last week had never paid much attention to the Mini. I always thought it would be slow and jittery since it relies so much on the network to do everything. But my Premier XL died after seven years and I needed to replace it with something. I don’t like paying monthly or annual service fees and the current price for lifetime service of $550 is ridiculous. So buying a full fledged Tivo was out of the question.
I decided to give the Mini a try. I have a MOCA enabled network, so plugging in a single coax cable gives me both my TV signal and internet connectivity. Technically, even the TV signal is essentially just network data since I’m just transmitting the picture from my TV Roamio over the network. But the fact that a single coax cable, plus a power cable and HDMI cable to the TV was all that I needed to hook this up made the installation very simple. No cat 5 connection needed on this one.
I did initially forget to register my device on tivo.com, so I wasted a few minutes troubleshooting until I figured that out. And then even after registering, I had to reconnect my Roamio to the Tivo service twice to get it all to work. So the installation process was not completely smooth, but no big deal since I’ve been using Tivo for so long. I could imagine that new users who don’t like to fiddle with these things could get a bit frustrated with this stuff though.
In any case, once up and running I ran it through a series of tests, and I was amazed to find that the performance of my Mini was even better than the Tivo Premier it replaced. No network lag at all, and very zippy menus. Netflix loads much faster on the Mini than the Premier as well.
Best of all, I was able to return my cable card and cut $5.00 off my monthly cable bill. For $150, this device lets you have a fully functional Tivo enabled television anywhere in your house without any Tivo service fees or cable equipment fees. That’s an incredible price for so much functionality. I’m probably going to get another one when my other Premier dies and just have one fully functioning Tivo driving Minis to all of the remote TVs. This also works great with Tivo Stream, which allows me to watch my TV shows on my IPad or Iphone.
If it weren’t for the slightly complex setup procedures to get Tivos working, I think Tivo would have sold many more millions of these devices. They are hands down a fantastic deal compared to the $25/month Frontier wants for a very basic DVR that can’t do half of what Tivo can do.

I absolutely LOVE my TiVo setup!! I decided to finally ditch the cable company’s boxes altogether and ordered the Mini. I was not disappointed!
Pros:
1. Allows me to watch TV in my living room utilizing one of the 6 tuners in my Roamio Pro located in my office, therefore eliminating the need for the archaic cable company’s box
2. Allows me to watch any of my recorded programs from my Roamio Pro in my office on my living room TV where the Mini resides. This is super convenient because my wife uses the Mini in the living room and I use the Roamio Pro in my office. No matter which of us schedules a recording, the other can play it in their location. Before this we had no way to watch programs that one of us recorded since they existed within a single cable company DVR in separate rooms
3. Has essentially the same interface as my Roamio Pro
4. RF remote! I wouldn’t get it any other way. It’s extremely convenient to be able to control it without worrying about pointing the remote towards the unit
5. I programmed the remote to turn on my TV and receiver with the push of a single button
6. Integrated streaming apps such as Netflix and Amazon work well
7. The box itself is extremely small and barely noticeable in my TV stand behind a closed glass door
8. Includes lifetime service
Cons:
1. Occasionally I experience some stutter that requires me to switch channels to eliminate it
2. It doesn’t start up in live TV mode like my Roamio does. Instead you have to press the live TV button to utilize a tuner on the Roamio Pro.
3. Setup was kind of a hassle. I had to call TiVo to get it going and I am extremely tech savvy
4. This is true of both the Mini and Roamio Pro; there’s no power button. Even after more than a year of ownership I still would like to have a button I could press that actually turns the TiVO off or puts it to sleep and wakes it up. The way it works now requires drilling down into menus with multiple button clicks and excessive navigation to get to that point.
The few minor cons I mentioned don’t change my opinion of it, this is a 5 star product without a doubt.
