I bought this hard drive to use with my PS4 because I used up the majority of the 500GB on there, and it has worked great. All I had to do was take it out of the box, connect the two devices with the USB cable that came included, the PS4 detected the hard drive and did some formatting, maybe check a box or two in settings, and it was all done. It has been about a month now, and its worked great. I’ll try to remember to update this review in a year to let everyone know how its held up.
Update #1 ~5 Months Later: Works great. I’ve had no problems with it.
Update #2 14 Months Later: Still works great, excellent purchase

*EDIT* After a little over a year, I had a partition on this drive fail. WD provides no software or first party support of any kind in terms of data recovery. Luckily I know my way around a computer pretty well and was able to recover my data myself, the average user however will probably have to shell out some money in the case that this happens to them. Also while WD is providing me with a new drive as a replacement, I am having to pay for shipping, which I find to be a little ridiculous. This entire process has been a headache and while I’ve purchased two new drives to use as backups, I am reluctant to buy from WD again. Taking a star off because of all of this.

This hard drive functions perfectly. It’s very light weight and has a very small footprint. By default it comes formatted for Windows (NTFS I believe) and reformatting it to work with my MacBook was a bit challenging, but that was more due to macOS than this drive. Needless to say, after formatting, this drive now functions flawlessly and I use it for Time Machine backups regularly.
The only downfall I’ve found is that it seems like LED in the back won’t completely turn off of the drive is connected to power, even if the computer is off. In my case, this was evident due to the fact that I have it connected to a powered USB hub, so even when my computer is off, the drive still receives power. This however is solved by just unplugging the drive when not in use so it really is just a minor issue, if even one at all.
I will definitely go with Western Digital for my next external hard drive purchase

I had no trouble installing this disk drive. Also, it is quite fast at backing up my data.
In reading other product reviews of external disk drives (not just WD), I have noticed a concern about the relatively high failure rate of disk drives in general — though, according to product reviews and evaluations, Western Digital’s drives seem to fare a little better than Seagate’s. But to help with this problem, if you purchase a WD, you will notice that the disk comes with some third-party software that allows you to thoroughly check the health of the disk, sector by sector, whenever you like. It can take a few hours, but you can always let it run in the background. It is among the apps called “WD Drive Utilities.” By running this app every now and then, you can lessen the possibility of a nasty surprise later.

This portable HDD drive worked exactly as we needed it to. Great for backing up a computer or transferring files. I bought a new computer and needed to transfer all my photos and documents from the old to the new, and this served the purpose perfectly. It will also be used to keep another computer backed up. Happy with it stationary storage, but I will be getting an SSD for portable storage because it is more durable and can handle being dropped better than this HDD drive will be able to. An SSD is also three times the cost for the same size, so this old-school drive, though slower, was worth it. And it wasn’t slow, per se. I didn’t feel like I was waiting around forever for it to finish. Just slower than an SSD would be.

I purchased and received the WD 1TB Black My Passport Portable External Hard Drive – USB 3.0 – WDBYNN0010BBK-WESN directly from amazon, and I’ve had no problems overall. My first impression was that this product’s size is great, seems well built and worked great out of the box with no issues whatsoever. I still have to test the transfer speeds, so I wont talk about that until then.

I haven’t done any benchmarks on this but it has much faster access speeds over wireless than our very old WD 3.5 inch external drive. It’s very a nice, compact design and very quiet. Just plug it in and go. I have it connected to our Netgear router and shared as both a Windows share and Apple Time Machine backup location, which works great so far. Only drawback is the cable length – it’s really short so if you want to hook it up permanently and stash it somewhere out of site you might need to invest in a longer one.

Have had a WD Passport in the past, and needed an additional one so went with the product I trusted. Thought the new build was very sleek. Purchased it, came with wonderfully designed packaging and promptly on time. But, upon plugging it into the computer the hard drive would not launch. Tried multiple product fixes on their site but nothing worked. Googled a lot and ended up finding out my brand new drive must be corrupt. Contacted the company and haven’t heard anything back yet.
Used to love this brand, but now frustrated.
UPDATE— Contacted the company and they took me step by step through how to fix this issue. Very helpful and kind, and did without a fuss. Love this company.
