I ordered this a few days back and it came yesterday. I installed it as soon as I got home from work, created a partition in the same way I’ve done a million times before, but something either went wrong there, which I don’t think happened. I’ve been installing and partitioning drives since I was like 10. I’m not saying it’s impossible I screwed up, I’m saying it’s very unlikely.
The computer I installed it in also booted slow which it shouldn’t because it’s a brand new, high end workstation PC booting from an M.2 that I built myself to perform very specific tasks. It normally takes 5-20 seconds to boot from dead cold. With that drive installed it took about a minute, which your average PC user probably wouldn’t even notice. But I’m not an average user, and I certainly did.
It also gave me issues when trying to render with Blender or open CC4, Substance Painter, or any GPU intensive program. Even Halo CE was laggy and that’s hardly a dent on my GPUs at max settings. I can play Halo and Render animations at the same time most nights.
I’m not sure what that was about, some sort of bottleneck in my machine somwhere, because when I removed the drive and wiped the partition, everything worked fine again.
I’m fairly sure there was a fault with the drive itself. I first noticed when it only showed 8gbs of capacity. I’ve seen USB sticks do this, but it’s almost universally because that portion of the memory is unallocated. This was not unallocated, it was simply not present.
I tried every formatting and recovery trick I know to no avail. Even tried a few paid recovery programs with no luck. At first I thought I just screwed up, but with each recovery and formatting methods I tried that failed, the more I was convinced I didn’t screw up.
Finally around 11 or so at night, after hours of trying I gave up and submitted a request for a replacement which came already today. I just installed said replacement moments ago. No issues what-so-ever. Installed fine and reads exactly as it should.
So, yeah. I did apparently receive a dud on the first go, but Amazon was quick to replace it and the new one has no issues thus far.
WD has always made good equipment and I stand by their HDDs even still. This was the first problem I’ve had with WD drives in many years, over a decade. I’ve had VERY old ones become corrupted, but never had one not work right out of the box.
Again, I want to stress that this was last night it all happened. Amazon got a replacement to me in less than 24 hours, so yeah. No complaints from me. Everything is working and I’m happy. Would buy again.

It may not be a super-fast SSD, but it’s 8TB, so it isn’t exactly designed to be your main drive, anyway.
As a storage drive, this drive has served me fantastically. I do A LOT of photo, image, audio, and video editing, and have more directories on my working storage drives than you can imagine. This drive sneers at my projects and keeps right on plugging away.
Will buy again…For sure.

Digital Computer Storage You Need for today’s large program files and data. I have been in computing for well over 50-years and I remember the first Personal Computer HDD, that cost more than this one and were only 5-MB in size! This drive is faster access and very quiet and will have all the storage that I will need for my computer and the second one I bought will work great for my Digital Movie Storage System on my Home Theatre System. Have had this for several months now and have had NO ISSUES with them. I highly recommend them for a Computer Storage Device, Home Network Attached Storage Device or Home Theatre Movie Storage Device. Great Mechanical Hard Disk drive from a trusted manufacturer!

Plex on Linux with two older (3 years ago) 4TB WD Blue storage drives that I used ‘WDidle3’ to redo head parking settings in were getting full. Newer WD blue drives can not be “WDidle3’ed” and I did have some concern as to the head parking issue on Linux. But it seems the issue may be with un-mounted drives and Linux checking for added drives every few seconds, not sure.
Auto mounting, WD or Linux kernel update may have addressed the issue in this drive as after half a month the head parking is still fairly low. (I am leaning toward mount at boot or Linux kernel on this one) My three years of use on older 4TB Blue drives are at twice the count on head parking averaged out.
I have Plex server set up to mount storage-drives at boot so drives are always mounted and system is on 24-7.
Space in Plex-Server is tight so I cloned off old 4TB to 6TB and expanded to fill drive. It gave me an extra 2TB of space to use for cloning off my DVD Blu-ray collections. Should give me a couple more years of grace before having to upgrade second drive, maybe I can afford the 8TB by then. (Happy Plexing)
Final Thoughts: Works fine for my use and drive came new without errors. Can not say that for all WD drives shipped to my door. But a quick check over a few days of data transfers and smart testing on new drives is the way to go for a long lived drive.

timeline:
Ordered May 7
Arrived May 9
Installed May 10 (we don’t get packages until fairly late in the day)
June 19 decide to Install BG3 onto the drive to play with a friend. Steam locks up completely, computer freezes up (windows 11)
Restart PC, Steam and all of this drive are nowhere to be found.
attempt to find it, not my first or last Windows Weirdness adventure.
Do steps by Freebooter and some other things. No luck at all.
Now i’m just upset to be just outside the window for anything to be done about it.
all because I wanted to play a game -.- hopefully I can extract my pictures and such off it. have tried using an external HD plug for it, it will not initialize at all, just the quiet death beeps.

Used a bunch in upgrading my media server (Plex). Also used in external USB disk array. Was using a NAS for a few years prior, but it was too dang slow. Nothing like local data speeds without the RAID slowness. Also use two sets of backups using a USB docks.
