Had it for about a year, It was extremely hard to get primed but eventually it worked. However when I moved house it wouldnt prime at all, Ive been trying for 3 days.

I have used this filter for about a year now and it works well with not much maintenance. Once you learn how to prime it, and it gets some good bacteria going in the filter, it works flawlessly and keeps our tank very clean. I am surprised by the negative reviews. I have not had issues with hose kinking and haven’t had to do anything special to keep them from kinking. I can imagine if you try to make them do tight bends that they would kink like any other type of vinyl hose. My only issues is that I wish the cap on the suction tube was a bit tighter. If water level is low enough it can suck in air around the seal and getting air in the system causes it to surge and not pump correctly. But that is cured by watching for water evaporation and keeping the level up. I wish the suction cups that hold both the spray bar and suction tube were a bit larger. But otherwise it seems to be a very well thought out solution.

This was the third one I’ve ordered over the years and will be the last. Had to return it because it had a cracked top. These filters do not seal well and usual require adding plumbers tape just to get suction. I bought a different product, conditioned to expect a lot of drama getting it up and running. Instead, the new brand was easy and works great. Bye Bye Zoo Med.

It’s been almost 2 years since I bought this. It’s just now started leaking. I’m going to have to replace one of the o-rings. Anyone having priming issues, just get as much air out as you can, then with the pump running, lift it above the water level of your tank and it will start flowing correctly. No priming needed. Then set pump wherever you want

This filter is great. There’s a wonderful video online with ZooMed’s step-by-step setup and cleaning procedures. As long as you follow that carefully, everything works quite easily. Several of the reviews here mention priming being an issue, but I’ve had zero problems there- be sure to fill the filter with water all the way up until you can’t fill it any further- not just to the top of the clear tank- to speed that up. And as long as you follow the recommended cleaning schedule, and replace the carbon, etc., it will continue to keep your tank clean. Combined with Exo Terra’s Turtle Clean, my tank has never been cleaner.
Another plus: this thing is whisper quiet! There’s an occasional tiny spitting sound as air bubbles come through, but otherwise the only noise you’ll hear depends on how you aim the spray bar. I point mine at the wall of the aquarium, so it’s silent.
My only complaint is with the included hoses: they kept kinking and folding over on themselves, restricting the flow of water. I cut mine down to size, but they still didn’t work well for my setup with the filter directly beside the tank. I wound up buying some stronger braided PVC tubing, and that completely solved my problems.

So far itβs been a pain, itβs nearly impossible to set the tubes up so they donβt kink, and when they do kink suction slows to a crawl and the thing gets loud. It took a lot of doing to get the suction going, and after a few weeks we are still trying to figure a way to make it work properly. When it runs though, it cleans the water very well.
