This is a fantastic ball for the beach or grass play. I set on my men’s team and I really like the grip on this ball. It’s a bit tacky feeling, but does not affect passing. Better yet, it maintains that feel for years. If you like a more smooth feeling ball, this one may not be the one for you. The ball fairs OK in rain. It does hold water, but not any more than most balls. Depending on how you inflate it, it can be a nice soft ball – or a solid feeling ball. I’ve been playing for over 20 years and this ball is my favorite by far for outdoor play. Make sure you get the right one (not the replica). There are economy models out there. The replica versions are horrible.

We’ve been playing volleyball every Sunday with a group this summer, which means we’ve gotten to try several balls including: Wilson Optx AVP ($80), Wilson AVP Replica, & Wilson Castaway ($20).
This Mikasa KOB is by far the best one in the bunch! This ball performs so well, has a sort of fantastic tacky feel to it so it’s palmable, easy to control, floats beautifully for serves, and doesn’t hurt arms when bumping. We play with a lot of women, skilled and unskilled, and all confirmed that this ball has alleviated arm pain significantly. I can see our group buying more of these balls!

Despite the product description, this ball is NOT “leather”. It’s “Sandtech(r)” composite “leather”, i.e. artificial. Mikasa has been making this ball for a couple of years for the King of the Beach people. It’s a decent ball, very comparable in handling to the new and prevalent Wilson AVP ball, but perhaps a better bargain given the current pricing. Don’t get me wrong, I own this ball and play with it regularly (plus the Wilson, for the record). When I saw the new “Miramar” branding, describing it as “leather” without qualifications, I had to buy one. Sad day. Younger players won’t care much, but for a while, the Spalding TopFlight leather volleyball was the best. Such a unique touch and feel. Of course, one dip in the water sort of wrecked it. The current Mikasa ball is the heir to that ball, arguably not the same feel, but better longevity.
