Another Earth

La Terra2 descritta in questo film esiste (e ha pure un sito dedicato ad essa: […]). Se questo non è un buon motivo per vedere questo film, non capisco quale possa esserlo.
Al momento io sono l’unico abitante di essa, e da ben 10 anni, ma il mondo cambia velocemente con 7 miliardi di persone che possono parlare tra di loro attraverso Internet e tra vent’anni ci potreste abitare anche voi, volenti o nolenti. Non è una brutta prospettiva, però, perché rispetto alla terra attuale (rispetto a Terra1) è un vero paradiso.
Terra2 è identica a Terra1 in tutto, meno che in un aspetto. Da che parti stia questo aspetto ve lo dice la prima inquadratura (nella quale Rhoda bacia un ragazzo). Lì le donne non si scontrano con gli uomini (come fa Rhoda con John all’inizio), ma si incontrano. Non vi dirò altro, ma due aspetti ve li segnalo. Uno è la storia del cosmonauta e la relativa “cura del cosmonauta”, che è la vera anima di Terra2. L’altra è sempre una storia, che lei racconta a lui alla fine. Sappiate che essa è la versione Terra1 degli eventi e che la versione Terra2 sarebbe molto, ma molto diversa.
Ok, il film non è particolarmente spettacolare. Ma vista la strordinaria importanza di quello che racconta e la precisione quasi scientifica con cui lo racconta, credo gli si possa perdonare.

„Another Earth“ ist ein sehr spezieller Film und keineswegs für die breite Masse bestimmt. Er wirft philosophische und existenzielle Fragen auf, die mich sehr zum Nachdenken angeregt haben.

Der Trailer ist unglaublich gut gelungen. Leider verspricht er mehr Science-Fiction als das, was der Film tatsächlich ist: Ein tiefgründiges Drama. Positiverweise bin ich ohne große Erwartungen an den Film herangegangen und wurde sehr überrascht.

Rhoda ist die Hauptperson in diesem Sci-Fi-Drama und hat als Jugendliche einen folgeschweren Autounfall verursacht. Eine dreiköpfige Familie saß in dem anderen Fahrzeug und bis auf den Vater hat kein einziger überlebt.

Die junge Frau fängt 4 Jahre später in einer Schule als Hausmeisterin an. Hier muss sie nicht viel reden. Hier kann sie nachdenken. Ihr alternder Kollege ist blind und redet ebenfalls nicht viel.

Eines Tages macht sie die Adresse des überlebenden Vaters ausfindig. Sie muss sich von dieser Schuld befreien und ihm alles erklären. Schließlich bringt sie kein Wort über die Lippen, als sie an seiner Tür steht, sondern bietet ihre Hilfe als Putzfrau an. Eine allmähliche Bindung baut sich zwischen den beiden auf und Rhoda schiebt ihr Geheimnis immer weiter auf – bis es irgendwann zu spät zu sein scheint.

Ihr fragt euch jetzt sicherlich: Warum heißt der Film „Another Earth“?
Deshalb: Ein weiteres Storyelement ist diese zweite Erde, die wie aus dem Nichts aufgetaucht ist und in der Regierung großes Aufsehen erregt. Über TV und Rundfunk erfährt Rhoda (und auch der Zuschauer), dass Forschungen angestellt und erste Kontaktaufnahmen unternommen werden. Schon bald wird klar: Auf „Erde 2“ leben Duplikate. Ob sie genau so sind wie auf dieser Welt? Ist das zweite Ich besser? Hat es dieselben Fehler gemacht? Das alles ist unheimlich spannend und raffiniert in diese eher melancholische Story eingebaut. Ich muss aber darauf hinweisen, dass es nicht Kernelement des Filmes ist. Also nicht so ausufernd. Um es vorweg zu nehmen: Eine Reise zur „Erde 2“ bekommt man hier nicht zu sehen.

Ja, der Film ist sehr poetisch und philosophisch, teilweise sogar hypnotisierend. Die Aufnahmen sind klasse und Brit Marling als Rhoda liefert eine umwerfend gute schauspielerische Leistung ab. Sie hat mich mitunter stark an Julia Roberts in jungen Jahren erinnert.

Durch diesen Streifen zieht sich eine Stille, dich ich so noch nie bei einem amerikanischen Film erleben durfte. Dieser Fakt dürfte eine Menge Leute abschrecken, aber wie ich schon sagte: „Another Earth“ ist kein Mainstream-Kino, bei weitem nicht.

Die Musik ist schlichtweg umwerfend. Der Komponist verdient meinen allergrößten Respekt vor dieser Meisterleistung.

Das Ende hat mich sehr überrascht und ebenfalls nachdenklich gestimmt. Ich dachte nur: „Stimmt eigentlich… Was denken DIE eigentlich?“
Wem stieg diese Frage auch in den Kopf?

Mit 89 Minuten ist der Film auch keine Minute zu lang oder zu kurz.

Durch den Film schlängelt sich auch eine beispiellose Atmosphäre. Meiner Meinung sollte man „Another Earth“ allein wegen des Erlebnisses mal anschauen, egal ob Drama-Muffel oder Sci-Fi-Hasser.

Fazit: Bewegt, hallt nach und stimmt nachdenklich. Die Schauspieler leisten hervorragende Arbeit und die Kerngeschichte ist realitätsnah und dürfte viele Leute ansprechen. Der Film behandelt Themen, die zeitlos bleiben: Schuld, Sühne und Vergebung.

Lo que ambos protagonistas ansían: una redención por su vida anterior, aparece de repente con una nueva tierra que les facilita esa oportunidad. Ciencia ficción de la buena, no en la línea de los tiroteos espaciales, sino en la del ansia de todos los seres humanos por que se corrigiesen eventos de sus vidas que les privaban de la alegría de vivir. Esa Nueva Tierra les abre esa posibilidad.

I will say a few things, first, that it is great science fiction, maybe a new cult film…slow moving but not dull and has an interesting but not too predictable message.

I still give it 5 stars after two seemingly random viewings two separate days but one year apart. After watching the second time and just reading Olly B.’s review, with which I agree in part:

Olly writes:

“Thence commences the tragic, and delicate, convergence of these lonely orbits. All the while that missing admission, like Earth II in the sky, looms ever larger.

Their burgeoning relationship, we know, is as flawed by human weakness as was the accident, and yet here are two people, with no alternative means of recovery and who offer each other great redemption, but only so long as there is this awful lie between them.”

First, a personal observation to Olly. Olly, you can wait a lifetime for people who have wronged you (even when you have proof) to apologize “the admission looms,” at least if you are only accepting words as The Apology. Sometimes actions speak many more worlds than do words.

We have an echo of ourselves from the following scenes:

1. man with tinfoil hat and sandwich sign warns that earth 1 is a holograph of earth 2
2. main character i believe tells us that earth 2 probably does not see us as earth 1
3. CETI official finds she has another self born the same date in the same place
4. We are told just before the end that “synchronicity” is broken the moment earth 1 saw earth 2 (which i missed the first time because this film is not yet captioned).
5. Rhonda meets herself in the last scene, presumably to ask herself what happened with John and any other astrophysics questions she has. Her other self does not appear to be focused on self-flagellation, so perhaps in earth 2, Rhonda graduated from MIT and became a real astrophysicist, instead of a cleaner.
6. Rhonda signs something to the wise, prophet like janitor while he lay in his hospital bed, I have to watch it a third time to try to transcribe it. I think it is something along the lines of “I get it.” This makes the viewer further wonder, who is this guy on earth 2?

this begs the main question of the film the age-old question, WHO AM I? To which there is no answer, or no collective answer, each of us must find our own individual answer to this ongoing query.

i see it now upon second viewing as a parallel reality (see for instance The Elegant Universe series on string theory). In this other earth, we have selves which have lives. these other selves trade information with us here on this earth all the time, every time we reflect on anything we see, hear, etc. all sensory impressions are traded back and forth all day long with this other “self.” and i believe all night long in dreams. for some those dreams are lucid, for others they are not.

So i am not sure about the ending. I, like Olly, like a good story, and this one is well-written, well-acted and proves that if a job is well done, it does not need expensive special effects to dress it up, nor will those special effects improve a not so good story not so well told as this one.

I don’t see the relationship between Rhoda and John as Olly does. I don’t see her as “lying” as much as I did the first time around, even though she herself exhibits shame, remorse, and calls herself a liar. I think a true liar would have not even ever approached John “to make amends,” even though she never really tells us either as Rhonda or as the narrator (since she is both) why she went to John, if only to apologize, after two close viewings, I still did not hear or read any apology. She does not actually say she is sorry in words, she does it in actions.

Jane Roberts, writing as Seth once said that most human tragedies, most of the pain we cause to one another, what we generally label as “crime,” “evil,” etc. is unintentional misdirected efforts to “help,” that backfire. I have seen quite a few examples of this in my own personal life. What message I get on the second viewing is that of great empathy for the perp. She was reckless, yes. She shoulda woulda taken a cab. She paid a price for the lives she took. Some would say not a big enough price. She did, however, in the end, the impossible. She restored, or tried to restore John to the place he would have been had she not been driving drunk that night. By playing around with synchronicity–by altering time as we know it. Did John find his wife and son in earth 2? We’ll have to wait for the sequel for that, and the concept is ripe for a TV series, IMHO, similar to the Stargate seri.

we all wonder what if? this movie is a study in many what ifs, makes good viewing for philosophy class, and i hope the high school and college teachers who also share my appreciation for good science fiction give it a watch. it is worth watching at least twice. To end, I’d like to quote Olly B. again, to say we all offer one another “great redemption” just by being aware of the echoes we create. Every action, has an equal and opposite reaction. Every “shoulda woulda” may exist physically in a parallel reality. One gets what one focuses most on.
