As a photographic novice, I too have been struggling to find a style that was more interesting than I was producing. I had played with texture but had not achieved the results I was after…..until I came across this book. Both inspiration and tutorial it has encouraged me to go on and learn more about textures and to produce my own style. I am still enjoying every chapter and keep going back to it again and again. I did toy with the idea of obtaining a Kindle edition but felt that you had to turn those pages and feel the atmosphere only a paper copy can evoke.

An excellent reference for applying textures creatively. Very highly recommended. Sarah has some amazing illustrations to demonstrate her texture work. I am very inspired by her work.

Wonderful book. Methods clear and understandable. I was surprised to learn that the steps Sarah takes aren’t pages and pages of difficult instructions but straight forward and rather simple. Sometimes less is more! I have used her principles after reading the book and the results are pleasing. I read the book in one day of course, but kept close by and picked up I re read it and found even more kernels to work with. Texture art / Photography isn’t for everyone, but the methods are easy enough for a novice to use and obtain great results. I have been working with textures for about 2 years now and found plenty of things I didn’t or hadn’t tried in the book.
The photos in the book or course are stunning; I would disagree there wasn’t much useable information … I found plenty and written in a nice format that was easy to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to begin using textures in photography and would also recommend to those who are quite good at texture work as there are some wonderful methods tucked neatly inside.
I ordered and received the book 4 days after!

Sarah Gardner, whom I follow on Instagram, is a talented photographer/artist. She arranges simple, beautiful elements into lovely vignettes which are then transformed with textures and an ethereal quality of light into romantic fine art. How she achieved that look intrigued me and I considered purchasing the ebook but balked at the price. Since it’s classified as a “textbook,” I was able to rent it instead for 30 days for under $10.
Chapter 5, “Processing Insights,” is where the author delivered for me with clear explanations and illustrations of her techniques. The rest of the chapters cover photography fundamentals, lighting, rules of composition and the basics of textures. If you are an experienced photographer or a Photoshop enthusiast, most of this you already know.
The ebook suffers from formatting issues whereby images split and certain words display as single letters, one to a line. More care in editing would have caught typographical and grammatical errors and reduced repetition. I don’t object to Sarah Gardner sharing her credentials and speaking about her creativity and inspiration but excessive self-aggrandizement and promotion is unnecessary as her work speaks volumes of her talent.
Overall, the book’s content is well-presented but when the title says “working with textures” I expected more on that topic and less on others. Having said that, decide for yourself – rent the book and see what you think. You will still learn something.

Very helpful Best advice on how to use textures I have come across.

The author, Sarah Gardner, is a finely educated lady in fine arts and has clearly discovered her photography and post processing style. She shares her preferences, tips and texture processing with the audience, giving the reader the tools to take our photographs to a new level. Sarah has “read my mind” answering fleeting questions I have wondered about during the few months’ learning curve of Photoshop I have been in, and describes my exact feelings and concerns to a tee. I find it difficult to lay down the book; while reading, I want to pick up my editing mouse and attempt edits and enhancements on my own photos. I’m fascinated with her knowledge, her “eye” for the exquisite photography style and look she has developed in her work. This book is in-depth description of photography using texturing that will definitely take you to a place in your “Art Beyond the Lens”. For the person looking to learn the soft, dreamy, vintage style of texturing this book is for you, and also her BEAUTIFUL textures (specifically Waxworks Collection).
This is the most intuitive photography book about postprocessing I have read.
It is:
Inspirational
Motivational
Realistic
Beyond normal photography styles

Très beau livre, inspirant

Since first viewing Sarah Gardner’s photo art, I’ve been a fan. This book delivers as promised. It acquaints the reader with the author’s artistic journey and working style, then moves on to shooting with textures in mind and explanation of textures before sharing her work flow. Sarah acknowledges that there are different ways in Photoshop to get to the finished image; but this is her book so it is expected and appreciated that she shares the processes that she uses. And to fully engage our visual senses, the book is full of gorgeous textured images. It is a beautiful and informative book, but if I could use only one word to describe it, that word would be inspirational!
I wait-listed the book on Amazon with their promise to notify me when the book was available. That notification from Amazon never came.

I recommend this book to anyone (beginner and beyond) who wants to learn how to use digital textures with digital photographs. I had already watched several videos covering digital textures, but needed more why and how beyond “just experiment until you get what you like.” I had already been using textures with my own photographs. This book really took me to a whole new level of understanding. I loved how Sarah Gardner explained how digital textures work with blend modes in Adobe Photoshop and how they interact with light and dark areas of the photograph. I found it very helpful to see the excellent examples using her own photographs and the step by step process describing how she created each photograph. I appreciated that Sarah provided more than one method to accomplish the same technique, such as removing texture from faces and skin. She also coved curves and levels in Photoshop which is important as well. I have returned to several sections of the book to help me use textures with my own photos, and I intend to purchase some of Sarah’s textures.
