Very simplistic and uninspiring arrangements. Did not find even one piece that was worth playing on my 26 string harp. I like Maeve Gilchrist’s fabulous and creative playing and that is a reason I purchased The Beatles for folk harp, but I was very disappointed.

The left and right hand are both written in double clef – where is the bass clef for the left hand? Also the left hand, written in double clef is a pain to read as most of the notes are way below the staff line – this is rubbish! What’s also very disappointing is that a lot of the more famous Beatles songs are not included in this collection. Very poor!

It is good that someone cares enough to write a book just for 22 string harp. Most books require a huge instrument investment. The author, Maeve Gilchrist, is a noted harpist of no small talents and the material is presented coherently and clearly.

The Beatles for Folk Harp should come with a caveat so that buyers know what they’ll be getting. First, the music is NOT written in the traditional treble clef (right hand) and bass clef (left hand); it is written using a double treble clef. Second, nowhere is this book advertised for very small lap harps, yet, when I received the book and tried a few songs, I discovered that the arrangements sounded sparse and tinny. After reading a description on the back of the book, I realized that this book was written to accommodate a 22-string LAP HARP. It was no wonder there was no bass or full chording on the left hand.
If Hal Leonard wishes to sell this book, the company should CLEARLY advertise both the format and the fact that all the songs are in the key of C with absolutely no lever changes, and they are written for a tiny 3-octave harp. When played on a standing lever harp, the songs in this book do not sound rich or full. In addition, the constant sixteenth note, eighth note, and triplet timing on both hands does not lend itself to beginning harp students–those who actually might be playing such a small harp with no levers! This book needs to be marketed better so people like me don’t waste their money buying it in hopes that it is a standard harp book.
