Purchased this for our 2 week trip to Fort Wilderness at Disney World. Prior to that trip we used this as our evening pool side retreat. We live on the Outer Banks of NC where the mosquitos will carry you away at night!! It’s so nice to enjoy the pool side without the bugs!! Also, we have a lot of wind here. We’ve had this tent up in 10-20mph winds and it’s never once threatened to take flight, unlike every other easy shade tent we’ve had. This screen room is awesome!! It’s a little on the heavy side, but that equates to sturdy and solid. Easy set-up. Took a little longer the first time because my wife and I didn’t read the instructions. Generally takes us no more than 10 minutes to have it completely set-up and ready to enjoy. It can easily be set-up by one person if necessary. It’s been wonderful for our two week trip. Turn on the box fan, sit back, enjoy a cold beverage, and forget all about the July, Florida heat!! Rain…no problem. Staying dry as can be! Totally recommend this product!!

We wanted the following in a screen shelter: sturdy steel poles, poles on the inside of the structure, mesh see-through vertical walls, two zipper doors, strong “tarp like roof material,” and easy set up. We got all of these things in the Coleman 12 x 10 Hex Instant Screened Shelter. I only wish Coleman made a larger one like a 14 X 14 or larger.

Suggestions: treat the top with water-proofing spray. Condensation forms easily in humid rainy conditions, and it drips.

The most important feature for me in a canopy or a screen house is the ability to make it rain proof to the best we can because that is where I keep the food and wet food is a mess. I use plastic drop cloths that I buy in the paint section. I buy the 1000 sq feet which is 10 continuous drop cloths which are 10 feet by 10 feet, i.e., 1000 square feet about $8. They are perforated if you want to use them connected or you can tear them apart. I tuck these drop cloths into the steel poles across the top of the inside of the tent/canopy. I duct tape the plastic at the top and together in a few places since when it rains it is usually windy too. To keep the roof condensation from dripping, I also put a drop cloth across the top of the shelter.
We weigh down the bottom of the plastic drops with rocks (found in the campground) or camping boxes so they don’t blow around. When it is not raining, I roll them up and use clothes pins to keep them out of the way. This sounds like a lot of work, but for a long camping trip – it is definitely worth it. It takes about 5-7 minutes to set up the shelter and about 20 minutes to hang the plastic. All items stay dry including the campers.

I just love this screened shelter.

Feb 2021 Update – Once we got the replacement roof / canopy, I decided to create a Poly Tarp cover to overlay on top of the original fabric. With that additional totally UV proof addition, we have gotten a full 5 full summers of use. So, I can attest that the rest of the unit holds up perfectly for years, screen side panels, framing, tie-down ropes… everything.

April, 2017. UPDATE AND WARNING!!!!! There is bad news now. When I went to set it up again this year, two very small tears appeared in the canopy top. Tried sewing them up, first by hand, then on our sewing machine. Total fail. The fabric apparently degraded seriously due to the 3 months of exposure to the sun. It now just wants to shred and rip. Contacted Coleman. They said that the screenhouse is only intended for occasional use, as with a few camping weekends per year. Although it was not stated anywhere on the product description, it turns out that on the inside tag of the carrying case, the fine-print at the bottom indicates that the fabric is nylon taffeta and is not intended for long-term use. The Coleman rep confirmed that it cannot handle continuous exposure to UV/Sun. Being great folks, they will be sending me a replacement top, under warranty.

Net: it is a great product for camping, but you cannot use it as we intended, as a permanent summer fixture on our deck. OCCASIONAL SHORT-TERM USE ONLY!!!

    August, 2016
Bought 3 months ago. Totally awesome. My wife is a magnet for mosquitos, so she could never sit outside in the evenings after work. So, I set this up on our back deck. And she has been out there darn near every evening since!

Very good quality, rather easy for the two of us to set up. Lives up to every claim made in the description.

Some additional notes and details of our installation:

It took about 3 cans of the ScotchGuard to really cover the entire top. Hint: apply the spray while the thing is set to half height, before you raise it all the way up.

Rather than use the included ropes to tie it down, I put threaded brass inserts into the deck boards and bolted the 6 legs down with eye bolts. The feet of the legs are designed with a bolt hole in them, so it was quick and easy. And no ropes to trip over.

I also used a couple of hooked toggle bolts to secure two of the corners to the side of the house. Together with bolting the legs down, it makes the thing very, very stable and secure. It has been fine and survived several thunderstorms with 50-60 mph wind gusts. In one case, when a really severe storm was coming, it was A quick 5 minute job to disconnect the toggle bolts and then lower the canopy to half-height ( like it is during set up.). Lowered down like that and bolted to the deck…. Solid. Only a true tornado ( or hurricane) wind would be threat.

Finally, the mesh screen is wonderful and total effective. We weighted the bottom flaps down with cheap garden stones (35 cents each, pus a can of spray paint to match them up with the gray flaps). And, no, the mosquitos and other bugs are NOT clever enough to sneak in between the deck boards from underneath. She’s never been bit in her sanctuary. Mind you, you gotta keep the doors zipped up at all times… And the view from inside is only slightly dimmed by the mesh.

All in all, this is a really excellent and low-cost alternative to building a big old screened room on the deck. At least if you only have 2-4 people) to accommodate. Also a great thing for the little kids (or anyone) to have some protection against Zika / West Nile in a play house sized environment. Totally enough room for a kiddie pool and a “Life Guard” chair in there!

It was fairly easy to put up and we have left ours up for the whole summer. It has stood up to some pretty good thunderstorms and wind. It does leak a bit if it is really raining hard and you want to sit in there. We will be taking it down in the fall and storing for the winter. Its great for up at our trailer keeping the bugs out for eating most meals and just for sitting in to keep away from the bugs. Definitely recommend it. Comes with a good carrying case so if we travel with the trailer we would take it with us.

Setting up the hex instant shelter went smoothly. It took more than the 3 minutes in Coleman’s product description, but I imagine the second time will take about that long to pop up the metal frame and attach the top. The instructions were pretty clear, which is always a treat.

The metal frame seems very sturdy, which I like, and the wheeled case makes the not inconsiderable weight manageable. The canopy can be set up very low to start out, so you can reach the velcro closures in the ceiling, and then be raised to the desired height. At over 8′ in the center, there can be plenty of clearance. The plastic push-button release levers do make it easy to adjust the pole height. They worked fine, but if they break, as some other commenters have mentioned, I will throw my preferences to durable over user-friendly.

Taking down the shelter also went smoothly. Best of all, everything fit back in the sturdy carrying case. \o/

One thing not clear in the description is that this hex shape approximates a circle. The 12′ is between any two opposite poles and the 10′ is between any two opposite sides. It’s a great shape, just a little hard to visualize from the description.

Overall, I am very satisfied. Hopefully I’ll still be using it years from now.

A very good product. Very easy and fast setup; you can leave the top fastened onto the frame when you pack it up and it still fits nicely into the bag/case. Next time, you just expand the frame, raise legs, and attach the screen (also easy, hooks into position). Very nice sturdy metal feet with holes through which you can stake into position. Includes heavy spikes and stakes for securing legs and top corner cords to ground. Ours did not come with any “wind panels”

As much as I love this screen tent and it is really nice… it took longer than three minutes to set up lol The frame itself only takes 3 mins to extend but you have to put the canopy on and the screen. Very misleading when it’s advertised as a instant 3 min set up screen tent The good part is you can use it with or without the screens so thats cool. I read a review after I bought it about the set up being harder and longer time frame so I set mine up before camping … very glad I did! It will only take me 10/15 mins now instead of the half hour it took the first time hahaha !!
