This book is written for social workers. If you read this as a family member of a person with a disability it will just be offensive. While this dialogue is needed, this book isn’t that. It is that social workers know what is best for those with disabilities. The book is full of interviews from social workers but lacks true valid research. Interviews aren’t facts, they are perspectives. Some of the things suggested are extremely unethical and violate the NASW code of ethics. If a person is a minor or has guardianship, it is extremely inappropriate and unethical to cultivate sexual experiences for them behind their family’s backs. Let me be clear that this needs to be a conversation, there needs to be advocacy on a macro level, but calling unethical shots will only hurt those conversations. Social workers don’t know what it is like to be a parent of a child with disabilities. Perspectives from both sides need to be heard. Until families are empowered and educated true policy and social change won’t occur.
