This is a fantastic quality case, very secure latches and lightweight. I think it is made for a thicker mandolin than mine. I play an Eastman MD-315 and the headstock has quite a bit of room to knock around while the case is closed. I wouldn’t recommend this case for the Eastman.

Irish Bouzouki cases are hard to find or expensive. I read on a forum that a banjo case would work for a Hora Concert Irish Bouzouki and this worked. It’s a tight fit where the neck meets the body, and the foam has caved in there, but this at least wedges the instrument and keeps it from moving inside the case. The case sits slightly open with the bouzouki inside, but can be fully shut with the latches without feeling excessive pressure on the instrument. This case was obviously designed for another instrument, so these are all things I can live with, otherwise it seems well made and sturdy enough for day to day travel

The case seems to be of good quality and is well made and finished. I’m using it for an Irish Bouzouki/tenor mandolin, so it’s a little long for that instrument. But it’s very difficult to find a specialized case for that instrument. Hoping that the ABS material stands up well. I have heard of ABS used in instrument cases breaking, but thought it was worth a try.

For the money, it’s probably the best case on the market. Definitely the best on Amazon. Two serious issues. The first I’ve seen mentioned in other reviews: the neck compartment is small. Like, too small for a pack of strings, so unless you play Bluegrass or Round Peak, it’s essentially useless. The second is the lack of lugs on the bottom of the case. This makes it impossible to store vertically, which is a serious pain.

Aside from that, the value is reasonable. I’m satisfied with what I received at a reasonable shipping speed, but I will eventually want to get a better case.

This case was purchased for my Deering Goodtime Midnight Special Edition. It fits like a glove and is well protected. There are 5 latches around the outside of the case, 4 around the top and 1 on the back. The latch closest to the handle has a lock which I do not use. There is a generous storage compartment that easily holds my picks, capo, tuner, and mute. The metal around the mating portions of the case are strong and protect the edges when open. The outer shell is molded of hard plastic and has many metal feet to support the case in many different orientations. The handle seems strong and made of molded plastic. I have no complaints with this case and would buy another Gator without hesitation.

This case will not work well for an open back banjo as it would not properly fit the case.

A very nice banjo case, well built, light weight, it even came with a shoulder carrying strap. Looks like it is built to last, my “Earl” snuggles right down in it, I feel alot better transporting it in something other than the original case and I can now keep the original case in it’s pristine condition. The only negative I see is that the storage compartment is a little small but I don’t need to haul along that much anyway.
If you are looking for a “very” hardsided case, don’t hesitate to buy one of these.

I have a big Gold Tone OB3 twanger. You can’t go wrong with a Gator case – top quality and good looking. It fits my banjo perfectly.

My mandolin came with one of those inexpensive (well, relatively) black feaux-leather cases with the furry liner and cheap clasps; it was brand new and the top wouldn’t close properly without putting pressure on the bridge.

So I cast about to find a replacement and came on this item. It arrived today, well packed in an oversized box and made an impression as soon as I saw it.

I’m used to using fine cases in carrying antique firearms around and wanted that kind of quality in this case and I got it in spades. The case is apparently made in the USA, though I can’t find a marking either way, and is very nicely put together. The chrome-plated latches are only one step up from the cheesy gold-colored ones on the old case but at least don’t look as cheap and tacky. The inner is foam-lined with the usual phony fur surface but it fits my Rover much better than did the first one.

I had thought about giving only a four-star rating thanks to the cheesy latches, but then, locks only keep out friends and any lock is only as strong as the container it secures; these are enough for this case.

All-in-all, this is a fine case for the money and I look forward to it keeping my baby safe from harm for a long time. There may be those who disagree, but I can recommend this one to anyone without reservation.

While Barry Kratzer, the fine Savannah, GA luthier was working on my mandolin I was looking for a case. I almost bought a Calton and asked Barry about it. He recommended it but told me he uses this Gator case for his own mandolins. Mine is one of the modern F types like a Gilchrist or Weber with 1 3/4″ sides and I have found that some cases are not deep enough for it. Barry checked it with one of his on hand Gator cases and confirmed a good fit. The Calton is much more expensive and built like a tank. The Gator will protect the mandolin in 9,999 cases out of 10,000, the Calton works for all 10,000. But I chose the Gator, not primarily for the price, but for the weight. The Gator feels feather light. While not up to the sturdiness of a Calton, the Gator has above average hardware. It does securely pad the body without putting pressure on the bridge and has a larger than average storage compartment. For me it was the perfect compromise of protection, weight and price.
