I bought eight of the Hydrofarm GCTB2 Heavy Duty Tomato Barrel with 4′ Towers because you’re not supposed to plant tomatoes in the same space/soil year-after-year. The Hydrofarm planters seem to be adequate for what I want to do, plus they came with trellises and are supposed to be self-watering. Since I am often called away during the summer, these fit my needs very well. I’m planning to use them this spring and will update my review when the season ends and I’ve harvested the tomatoes. The containers seem kind of small, but the trellises were easy to put together. Overall, the tomato planters seem rather mediocre in quality, but we will see how they hold up.

I made the mistake of planting two cherry tomato plants in the one oblong container and they grew like crazy – over 6 feet high and at least 2 feet outside the container in all directions – tons of cherry tomatoes – it was very easy to assemble however as the plants grew and grew the top bar kept popping out so I had to tie all four corners (maybe the top rail could have corner supports) then we had a wind and the weight of the plants blew the whole structure apart so I moved it to the deck railing and tied it firmly to the railing and it has held the weight of the HUGE plants. I live in Northern Ontario and am amazed at how much better these did than last years in ordinary planters – having the water reservoir in the bottom is the best idea ever.

My tomato plant thrives on/in this planter so I bought a second one for my pepper plant and he’s happy too! It’s really easy to put together, easy to water from the bottom and looks exactly as described.

I was looking for something that was self watering and that I could grow cucumbers and tomatoes in the house over the winter. I wanted something to hang the growing light on and that had a trellis for the plants to grow up or be tied to. This actually is the perfect size for indoors. I have had it going for several weeks now and this is what I have found. !. the size is great. 2. it self waters wonderfully. 3. the height is also perfect. 4. the base is not heavily made but is adequate . 5 Here is the major problem. The trellis is so cheaply made that it wouldn’t hold together by itself. Flimsy, cheap, junk. It is not going to hold much weight. I was able to hang my grow light from it by gluing the pieces together and being extremely careful w/it. So.. Overall it looks good in the house. It is the perfect size for a couple of tomato plants. I can hang the grow light from it right over the plants. I only have to add water to the reservoir once a week. If they would only add a higher quality trellis it would be perfect and well worth the money.

No lleva instrucciones pero es fácil de montar, la estructura es semi frágil pero para plantas que no tengan un fruto muy pesado ya va bien. La maceta es resistente, y está bien pensada con el depósito por eso le di una buena puntuación. Que tenga ruedas le da un plus para poder mover la maceta sin lebantarla.

I’m really kind of impressed with this. I read all the reviews and almost didn’t order it as I was afraid it would be too flimsy. Hardly!
The Hydrofarm Tomato Trellis is really well formed, easily put together, and seems very sturdy. It’s very easy to move around, and is easy to work with in general.
I put it together and put a couple bags of dirt in it quickly as we had storms coming. The Hydrofarm stayed in place and took the storm like a trooper. I’ve since had surgery and have not been able to put my tomatoes in it yet, but will soon.
It’s quite deep and could easily have numerous uses. However, I don’t suspect that the hard plastic will last more than a year or 2. But for the price, that’s fine.
I’m building an exterior garden room and will eventually put this at the entry with my raised beds towards the back of the room. It will be fun to go pick my salad from my “room”.
This particular Hydrofarm will have my cherry tomatoes in it. I would highly recommend this product if you have limited space to work with. It’s cute and a lot sturdier than discussed in other reviews. I’m glad I got it.
Update: I put a couple seeds of zucchini on one end and a couple seeds of yellow summer squash on the other, with a cherry tomato in the middle. Everything is growing excellently. They love the organic soil and the magical rain. I love this Hydrofarm!!

I decided I was going to grow some cherry tomatoes this year (2014) and because there are too many deer, opossums, raccoons and varmints in the neighborhood, I wanted to grow them indoors. So far, I’ve used the bottom of an egg carton to germinate my tomato seeds and just transplanted them to the Hydrofarm Tomato Barrel planter. This planter is a really cool design. There is a reservoir at the bottom to help keep the soil hydrated. The expandable tower is really a cool design. Three dowels lock into holes in the base and then a plastic riser gets added at the top. The riser provides key support points for the plants. As the plants continue to grow, you add another set of dowels and another riser. There are enough dowels and risers for a 4-foot tall support tower. I’ll update the review throughout the growing season.

It was a month ago that I wrote my original review, and it only gets better from here! My tomato plants are now Godzilla-sized and are growing above the 4th support ring. I contacted the Hydrofarm company and asked where I could get 2 more risers and rings as my plants just keep growing. Pleasant surprise!!! The company sent them for free! And none too soon as my plants now easily reach to the 5th riser level!!!
One suggestion is to get yourself a metal gooseneck funnel so that filling the reservoir is easy and you don’t make a mess. The metal funnel holds its shape, whereas the plastic flexible ones just don’t serve the purpose.

My tomato plants are now past the 6th riser and touching the ceiling. There are actually 7 plants in the pot and they are drinking over 2 liters of water per day via the bottom reservoir! Amazing!

Went together easy, but had a broken part. Seller made it right and I am very Happy. Thank you for taking care of it and I would buy from seller again. It’s a simple but seems to work great. Getting the proper amout of water has always been a problem for me so I hope this helps.
