Kingsyard Adjustable Metal Bird Feeder With Dome

Just what I wanted. The plastic dome is bigger than the base which means that the pigeons have yet to work out how to access the food. The small birds are quite happy to use it. A carefully thought out design.

GENERAL COMMENTS: REALLY like this Kingsyard feeder w/adjustable domed cover. Simple to assemble, high-quality, sturdy and nice-looking. The dome’s adjustment knob is large and easy to use. Raising the dome to clean and refill the seed tray was also easy. The hook and its attachment to seed tray is sturdier than my long-standing, but now broken, polycarbonate dome feeder (WBU). Being a metal seed tray makes this feeder heavier than others and sometimes in windy conditions it may require an occasional “tweak” to tighten the hook-to-seed tray. I do NOT consider this a design flaw but a minor issue and not a big deal.

Had concern whether the black metal seed tray would get too hot in summer for bird perching (live in the south and we get steamy temps). My feeders are shaded in the morning and get the direct hot sun in the afternoon. I’ve watched now for several weeks and have NOT seen any real decrease in feeding activity while the feeders are in the sun. Feeders are busy all-day long.

SEED TRAY: Some reviews have commented the seed tray does not hold enough seed. I like the shallower tray for good reason. I clean and refill the seed tray with food every 1-2 days to avoid moisture from accumulating and seeing growth of a fast-growing string mold (clumps seed and looks like wispy spider web-like material…and common when it’s humid). The sloped dome works well to keep seed reasonably dry in most rainstorms, but if wind sends rain ‘sideways’ the seed is going to get wet, but that will happen w/any type of feeder. I don’t worry about it becuz w/me refilling the tray frequently avoids wet seed from accumulating and growing mold.

TYPE of BIRDS & DOME ADJUSTMENT: I only like attracting smaller birds and woodpeckers to any of my feeders. Admittedly I don’t like the bully birds (e.g. grackles, bluejays, blackbirds, cowbirds, catbirds, doves and pigeons) as they crowd the feeders and scare away the smaller birds. So, my goal is to prohibit bully bird access to my feeders. To that effect I experimented w/the dome height over the seed tray. Found that 3½ inches from the bottom of the metal seed tray to the bottom of the dome worked great (pics attached). The cardinals, being the bigger of the smaller birds can access the feeder without any problems. Other birds I’ve seen eating at my feeders include finches, nuthatches, wrens, chickadees, tufted titmouse and Eastern bluebirds. Sure, the bully birds try to figure a way to enter the feeders but are unsuccessful. In short order, they eventually give up and leave so then the smaller birds return.

Although my woodpeckers prefer the other 2 food selections I have out for them, they will access this seed tray by holding onto its side and typically do a ‘grab-and-go’ to snatch a peanut/seeds and then fly away. Even though I attract some woodpecker species that are sizable birds, they do not “tip or spill” this sturdy feeder when perching. So, all-in-all everybody’s happy and dining (except the bullies).

Liked this feeder so well I ordered a second one to use w/another type of seed. My 2 Kingsyard feeders have attracted a LOT of different birds. I’m truly enjoying it! Extremely pleased w/this purchase.

The Kingsyard Bird Feeder does the job and is easy to assemble. Immediately after being installed on my back deck, the feeder had bluebirds galore (and other feathered visitors). The dish is strong enough and large enough to support six bluebirds at a time– which I have viewed on several occasions. However, the frequent comings and goings of the birds exposes this feeder’s design flaw: the supporting post merely screws into the base, and in time, becomes unscrewed as the birds fly in and out. After only two weeks, I discovered the dish and its spilled contents all over my deck. Since then it has become unscrewed, but I have caught it before the “breaking” point and merely screwed it tight again. I have also been told by a friend that she has had the same issue with her Kingsyard Feeder and her solution was to superglue the post to the base.

I have this hanging from a bird feeder pole in my yard, and it’s been up for about 6 weeks now. It’s intended for any bird that’s interested, and I wasn’t looking for squirrel prevention as much as weather protection. This has kept the seed from being buried in snow or crusted with ice from freezing rain. At the widest setting it has so far accommodated every bird that has tried to land on it. The crows haven’t tried, and might be too big, but the cardinals and blue jays have no trouble. Even the much less manoeuvrable mourning doves can land on it without banging their heads. The feeder is remarkably stable, and doesn’t swing much under normal conditions. It also seems pretty durable so far. We’ve had two *really* windy nights since I installed it (wind warnings issued), and I found it on the ground those mornings. The second time, the post was bent slightly near the base. It hasn’t affected the function at all, the birds don’t care, and only my OCD notices that it’s crooked. I have since added a garden tie to turn the hook into a loop and prevent it swinging off in a strong wind, and it’s worked very well – we haven’t had a wind warning since.
I haven’t seen squirrels on it, but I also haven’t seen them try. Just that is an improvement over the previous basic tray feeder I had there, though. I have a baffle on the pole that they can’t get past for a ground approach, but they can get to the top of the pole from a tree. I suspect that a very determined and acrobatic squirrel could get across from the pole to the feeder after that with some trial and error, but so far they’re raiding a more accessible feeder and ignoring this one. With the previous tray they could just drop down onto it. I can now put peanuts out for the blue jays without squirrels stealing them! (I’ll update the review if I catch the bratty little tree rats on this one.)
Noted problems: Make sure the base is securely screwed on every time you fill it. It has fallen off once, and I have no idea how it came loose (although two ground impacts may have contributed). Take it down if a wind warning is issued, or make sure it *can’t* come off whatever it’s hanging from. It may be durable, but I doubt that it’s entirely unbreakable. Ice buildup affects the spinning function (still spins, but not freely), but bringing it indoors to thaw fixed that.
Over all, I’m quite happy with this feeder.

These are very good bird feeders, l now have two and in the winter I will buy another.
The birds love them as I shop as the nut into small pieces and the rest off the food get broken down so the birds can get as much as they need.
