Kingsyard Glass Hummingbird Feeder With Ant Moat

Looks like it was very well made, not sure how it works so far at attracting hummingbirds, have to wait for them to discover it, plus I need a taller pole or different place to put it, but its gorgeous!

I have many hummingbird feeders. This ones seems to attract the most birds. Plus the feeder is eye-catching in the yard. It is easy to clean.

I had no idea any moats were a thing until I purchased this. It’s beautiful, great quality, easy to clean, and the hummingbirds love it. Bought a second one!

I purchased this hummingbird feeder as a second feeder for my porch. I was curious as to which type of feeder they preferred, a perched feeder or a non-perched feeder. They definitely prefer the perch feature. This feeder is a beautiful ombre blue to green feeder that attracts many birds to it. The feeder includes an ant moat that traps any other critters that attempt to enter the feeder. It is easy to assemble and has a wide opening for pouring in the sugar water. There are six, red feeding port flowers that allows multiple birds to feed at once. I would definitely recommend this feeder for anyone wanting to attract hummingbirds to their space.

This is a preliminary review, and some general comments about Hummer feeders.

I just received the feeder. I took it out of the box immediately to test it. I have tested several decorative Hummer feeders over the last three years that are sold here. A good many of them are simply Chinese junk. Period.

I worked for several years at a Wild Birds Unlimited store in the Midwest, and as such became very familiar with all the product lines of feeders for all kinds of birds, Hummers included. I had just about every feeder you can imagine in my backyard, and other assorted bird attracting things. Many of the items we sold back then are now quite pricey, and in a few cases their quality is not the same or companies aren’t even around any more.

I used the old Perky Pet feeders for years. It was the gold standard. Simple to clean and use. But when my old ones needed to be replaced, I was disappointed with how their new design leaked on almost every one I tried. Thus began my “testing.”

Two years ago I I bought a very nice decorative feeder here that I love, and found it to be very reliable. But a lot of these Chinese firms are fly by night. You go back a few weeks or months later to buy another one…and they’re no longer available or the company doesn’t exist. (And those supposed company names…I refuse to buy anything from a name that makes no sense, just a jumble of letters.) Just wanted to give some background here.

I put this new feeder to the test like I have all the others. I had my druthers about the removable *plastic* base and rubber gasket, being sufficient enough to prevent leaking. Here in FL (I have migratory Hummers here in Winter), this rubber gasket may not stay resilient for long in our environment. Time will tell. I first took the base off, then put it back on again. You have to be sure it’s sealed just right, and *tightly*, otherwise it will leak as it did on my first try. Worked just fine the second try, no leaking, after I secured the base a little better. I like the fact you can separate the base from the top. I can’t do that with my other feeder.

The “top” of the feeder that connects to this bottom piece, where the feeder ports are, is actually *metal*. It looks quite nice. But my other decorative feeder, only two years old, is already showing signs of the paint chipping off slightly. They all say they’re weather resilient, or words to that effect. But again, in a harsh environment like FL, everything wears out/breaks down 3x faster.

The glass container is gorgeous, and sturdy. Colors are just as depicted here. Appears very durable. The hanger is quite good as well. A solid piece of metal, not some cheap, thin thing like too many others I have looked at. It screws into the base easily, and securely. When I tested it, I had no leaking. 😁 It can tend to be a bit heavy if it were to be completely filled at 24 oz. Because I usually only have one or two Hummers at a time at best in Winter, and have to change it every 2-3 days, I only fill my feeders about 1/4 full; that helps keeps the weight down.

The *plastic* ant moat…will suffice, I suppose. It’s the perfect size, unlike some that are supplied with feeders; room for maybe one ant, lol! The water dries up in a day, too. I’ve never found an ant moat like this, though, that didn’t leak. This plastic will likely fade pronto here in the south or if in the sun too long, like others I tried. So I will be using my reliable, sturdy, utilitarian plastic one instead that I have used for years. A bit faded, but it does what it’s supposed to.

I applaud the company for their very detailed and excellent information that comes with the feeder. When most companies can’t be bothered with any type of instructions…or ones that are poorly translated 🤨…, Kingsyard was good enough to make the effort. You don’t even get this kind of detailed instructions with major appliances anymore! Especially important for those who are just getting started feeding Hummers.

What I was also impressed with was that they actually gave instructions on how to make sugar water. A big hooray for them there. Far too many manufacturers and sales people still tell customers to buy the red stuff in the store, or put red food dye in the water. A big NO! Studies have shown these have ill effects on Hummers, and can even decrease their life span. One thing though…you really don’t need to boil the water to make the sugar dissolve. Just stir it in a cup for a minute or so, and most (if not all) of the sugar should dissolve easily. 😉

Their note about changing water is spot on. You may, however, have to change it every two (2) days if it’s absurdly hot/humid…like it’s been most everywhere these last two Summers. Hang it in the shade, if possible. Under the eaves works well (no critters to bother it). Most folks, including me, just put it on a shepherd’s crook in the shade (where you absolutely need an ant moat!). Because this feeder is on the heavier side, though, you might need a good sturdy hook and not a cheap one from a dollar store. But then if you have clay soil…😉 If squirrels or raccoons start messing with it on a shepherd’s crook, it needs to be hung on a feeder pole with a raccoon baffle. Deer/bears? Ya’ll know what you need to do.

If you live where it’s on the cooler side (where I wish I was!) or in Spring, you might be able to get by with changing it every 4 or 5 days. At any rate, really try to avoid leaving it until the water gets cloudy looking at all…that means you’ve waited too long and need to get on it. Be sure all mold is removed from feeder when cleaning, too. It also can actually male Hummers sick or worse.

An old toothbrush and a set of those teeny, tiny bottle brushes (sold here) are great for getting to those challenging areas like feeder ports. Every time I give a Hummer feeder for a gift, I include these. When cleaning, use a little antibacterial Dawn. It’s like the duct tape of essentials to have in life in terms of its usefulness for so many things.
