My teacher uses this book with many of his students. I enjoy learning from him, so I tolerate this book, although it shows its age compared to Hal Leonard’s “Essential elements” series. The latter comes with audio files (accompaniment, both with and without your instrument), uses more modern teaching techniques (the etudes are broken down into smaller steps with clearly identifiable learning objectives), and is printed in more legible type and in colored ink (both enhance readability). By contrast, “Learn to play trumpet and cornet” has no audio files (preparing for lessons is a challenge when you don’t hear the tune in your head when reading music), its etudes are spaced in slightly wider steps of difficulty, and is printed in thin type making the music harder to read from a distance. If your teacher lets you choose, definitely go for Hal Leonard.
