It says itโs portable but thatโs really only the case if you plan to use it in windows that are all the same size: while the hoseโs window vent pane is adjustable from 18โ to to 36โ with extension panels, it comes with adhesive-backed foam weather strips that you are supposed to cut to size and adhere to all four sides of the vent pane in order to seal it, and once you cut and stick the weather strips thatโs itโyou canโt then switch the unit to a different-sized window without having another set of strips cut to the size the other window (although this is probably easy enough to DIY).
Also, since the extension panels for windows wider than 18โ are slightly narrower than the main vent pane (to allow them to slide back and forth), the weather strips donโt sit completely level across the top of the window interface, meaning there will be a gap, albeit tiny, between the weather strip and the window sash on the extension-panel side. The manual recommends โus[ing] โno resideโ duct tape (not provided) to seal any gaps around the installed panel assembly, around the diffuser, and between the sashesโ which Iโm not above doing, however itโs tricky to do right (particularly around the diffuser attachment) and is unsightly, especially for a $300+ expenditure. And it makes it that much more difficult to move the unit to another location.
Since this type of AC is not the most efficient by design, the portability and its potential for use in with different-sized windowsโwhich we have in our new placeโwas the main selling point for me, so I’m a little disappointed to be hamstrung by these issues.
I think I may rig a custom panel for each of the two different window sizes I want to be able to use this in, as otherwise I’m happy with the machine: itโs easy to wheel around and easy to use, with features that tell you when to clean the filter and empty the water collection tank, and has a nice look, cooling feel, and size profile. And while itโs by no means “quiet,” itโs not as loud as our 7-year-old RCA window unit, or louder than my conception of how loud a plug-in AC unit usually is (the one in the house I grew up in sounded like a construction site compressor; to us this was just the โsound of coolnessโ). But yeah it might not be ideal in the immediate background for phone calls.
