Considering the cost of this keyboard – it is a phenominal bargain. This is a very good quality controller keyboard (ie. no internal sounds, just midi control). I have to come clean and say that I am not primarily a keyboard player but I have worked with music composition software for over fifteen years both professionally and for fun! This keyboard works superbly with a Mac running Logic Pro, MOTU DP 8, Protools 9 and Ableton Live. Its very easy to set up with the software you can download from the m-audio/avid website. The display isn’t super high resolution but gives very useful feedback on the current voice or parameter selected in the software. It really feels quite solidly built and the faders, pads and rotary controls all feel very reasonable. Some of the more negative reviews on the internet really seem quite incredible considering the relatively low cost of this keyboard. I would purchase this again without hestitation. The key action doesn’t exactly feel like a piano – I’d be surprised if it did, but it gives a very positive feel and the keys seem to respond quite accurately to the velocity control. I’ve also read that the aftertouch is very short travel – its not amazing but again really quite ok and perfectly usable.

Grrrr. I was looking for a semi weighted keyboard. Something that was a cross between my Technics piano, and my synths. This isn’t it.
How on earth M Audio think they can justify applying the term ‘semi weighted’ to this boggles the mind. There is no ‘weight’ in this keyboard. Zero. All there are are full travel keys with a medium strong spring attached, providing a constant pressure across the full range of travel, both on the down stroke and the up.
Which makes it the worst of all worlds from a keyboard action perspective – it has neither the quick, light characteristics of a non-weighted synth, nor the dynamic response/feel of a proper weighted action, whilst forcing your fingers to work twice as hard.
It’s probably a decent MIDI controller for DAW stuff – but there plenty of those out there that don’t also claim to have a semi-weighted keyboard. I feel ripped off, and this will be going to ebay sooner rather than later.

The product works well, using it with Mac Pro 15″ and Logic Studio, however the size of the product is incorrectly displayed. It is much larger than reported, closer to 2.5 feet wide and not the reported 18 inches. I would have given it 4 to 5 stars, however, I wanted something much smaller and Amazon incorrectly reports the dimension on the product specifications. Which is what led me to purchase this specific item. I am hoping that a 1 star rating will have someone read my review to make them aware of the inaccuracy. I am currently traveling and dont have the exact dimensions with me, however, I will update my post with them.

Workhorse. Works as expected. Elements fail on these all the time. After 2 years, mine now intermittently plays A3 as if there’s a loose connection inside. Not the best, but they’re everywhere, so as a touring musician, if one fails you can get another one immediately. Wish the construction was sturdier. But M-Audio is good with warranty and replacement.

First off, I am definitely on the novice side of music production, so I don’t have a great deal of contrast to provide against other MIDI controllers. I’m not sure if this keyboard would be a good fit for someone more on the professional side of production, but for my needs, it’s pretty much ideal.
I bought this to replace an aging first-gen Oxygen 8 and KeyStation 49. Since this basically combines the features found in both of those keyboards, it was a good fit for me. The keys feel nice and everything is extremely configurable. Build quality is great, and it certainly has a nice feature set for the price. My only complaint is the same as what a couple of others have mentioned – the size. I was expecting it to be around the size of my KeyStation 49, but it’s at least 4 or 5 inches longer. It’s also quite a bit heavier. This is no way makes me any less happy about my purchase, I just feel that it’s worth mentioning.
My only other complaint is that the drum pads require a pretty solid thump to get full velocity output from them even though the sensitivity is configurable. They still work fine for my purposes, but I found that a little annoying.
I have been using this with Reason 6.5 with no problems at all. Some of the default assignments for various instruments (especially Kong) are rather strange, but it’s easy enough to reconfigure controls in whatever way you like. It would have been nice to have more logical assignments to things like the drum pads straight out of the box, but it’s only a minor inconvenience. I think the latest version of M-Audio’s DirectLink software only has support up to Reason 5. I’d imagine assignments will be better when/if they provide an update that includes Reason 6+.
All in all I’m extremely happy with my purchase. I expect the Axiom 49 will serve my creatives needs for years to come.

Got this one and no USB cable inside. Wrote to M-Adio and no answer, so I had to buy it. Possibly it’s not their fault, box was a bit damaged. Delivery came in time.
Now about the keyboard… I’m using Ableton on Windows 8.1 (62-bit) and I’ve tried different versions. Ableton 6 to 7 Axiom was not recognized by MIDI cable, but using USB works perfectly. Versions Ableton 8 and 9 for me had no problems with both USB and MIDI cables. As for me keyboar is handy, great looking, no complains, and to work with this controller is a pleasure. Maybe a bit too heavy if you want this one for live performance, but for me it’s not a problem. I point five stars for controller itself and quick delivery, and minus 2 stars because of not finding expected USB cable.

This is a nice midi controller. A word of warning though if you are a Cakewalk, Sonar user.
Since this is a brand new version of the Axiom 49, the software writers at Roland have not had time to write code for all the functions it provides.
As a result, the Direct Link that M-audio is advertising does not work on Cakewalk Sonar up thru version 8.5.
This means you will need to hand map some of the controller buttons to your DAW if you want them to function.
It does auto-map in some DAWs like the latest versions of Pro tools, Ableton Live to name a couple.
I was unaware of this when I purchased it so I went thru a lot of frustration trying to figure out how the thing is supposed to work. Documentation is sparse so I relied on the internet especially YouTube to help me thru it.
I like the controller over all. It is solidly built and is of good quality. The keys and drum pads work very well.
It will be even better when the software technology catches up to it.

I’d give this keyboard 4.5 stars if I could, But i thought i’d round up to 5.
The fact that its USB powered is great! It had some trouble working completely with Abletlon Live 8.3, but after some research it became apparent that the makers had managed to screw up the Directlink for m-audio products, so I had to download 8.1.4 specifically for it to work correctly. (unfortunately this is the only DAW I have tried it with) It now works like a treat!
The wheels are very nicely weighted as are the keys considering its an entry level product. The keys do stick sometimes on the first push if they have been left for a while, and they can be a little loud (clunky) when released.
The encoders are a little annoying to use, but work fine. Instead of going from 1 to 10, in a seven o’clock to five o’clock position, they will turn indefinitely because it takes more than one complete revolution to get from 0-max. This can be fixed by acceleration, but it removes the finer details. Not a massive problem, but it will annoy some people.
All the buttons are back-lit nicely, apart from the transport buttons which is a little weird… that would have been nice. The pads are very sensitive, perhaps a little too much (there’s some unintentional double striking, and occasionally a miss strike when the pad has been properly hit.), but with some learning i’m sure i could get to grips with them.
The LCD back-lit display is clear and bright, though its difficult to see at an angle, if the keyboard is flat on a desk in front of you for example. Not a big deal. Cant fault the faders.
It has a very handy pair of octave buttons for changing up and down octaves on the keys which can also be used to transpose (The buttons also feels very nice when depressed.). Handy.
The build quality is excellent, (not to mention it looks the part!) I could see this keyboard gigging if I needed it to, it feels very sturdy.
