The concept of this bird feeder is great, which is why I purchased it: if a squirrel gets on it, its weight closes the openings and it can’t access the food, therefore it will eventually give up trying. The problem is: it doesn’t work. When the squirrel gets on the feeder, it causes the mechanism to be lopsided (the squirrel’s weight is not evenly distributed), so the slide action doesn’t work, the openings where the food is stay open, and the squirrel has a feast. In fact, this feeder seems to make it easier for the squirrel to get to the food than our other feeders do. It must – because this is the one they’re now going to all the time.

Quand on rempli la mangeoire les graines tombent en dehors. Peu solide, une mangeoire cassée à son arrivée: très mal emballé

Les oiseaux sont heureux, les écureuils moins, mais c’est fait pour ça !

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. I also own a Yankee Clipper bird feeder that has a rotating perch on the botton that SLINGS the squirrels off when they try to eat the bird seed. It, however, required recharging and it wasn’t always easy to stay on top of that need. This one works on simple gravity. When the squirrel jumps onto the feeder, his weight closes the little trap doors in front of the feed holes and prevents him from getting to the good stuff. The birds are therefore, able to enjoy their seed without interference.

When scrolling through reviews about the Perky-Pet 5141-2 Squirrel Slammer Wild Bird Feeder, I noticed a number of complaints about the awkward and seemingly uncomfortable perch on which the birds rest to eat. There were a few innovative ideas on how to amend the problem, but they seemed somewhat complicated. So I went to our local hardware store and purchased some plastic tubing. I cut the tubing into four 3.5 inch lengths and four 2.25 inch lengths. With a box cutter, I split each piece of tubing down its length. I then slipped each piece of tubing onto the perch. Very simple and it cost me less than a dollar!

Just a heads up, this thing is not squirrel proof. We had it hanging from a hanger attached to the railing of the porch. It is right outside my window as I work and I watched these squirrels somehow hang on to this thing and still get seed out. They would eat every bit of seed out of it, I think if enough weight was on one side it would bind up and not slide down to block the slot. Eventually they would hang on it and bounce around to the point where it finally fell into the pine straw and broke. I need to glue it back together but I haven’t done it yet. Huge waste of money, would not recommend.

Not sure why, but my bird feeder came in broken, kept separating at bottom…so, I just glued it.
I have three different perky pet feeders. I love them. They may not keep the super smart squirrels from trying to get a treat, but I figure they earned one if they get one. I like that it keeps the bird food dry and I don’t have to keep filling it every other day. They last longer and stay fresh looking.

I really had high hopes for this one.
On the plus side, the birds and feeding openings are sheltered by the little plastic umbrella. Slippery and no place for squirrels to hang onto.
Another good thing about this one is its made from hard plastic. Assuming the plastic lasts, its a smarter design than other Perky Pet designs that are made from a very convenient wire mesh. By convenient, I mean the squirrels have all the little hand-holds they want. Nice because it means they can munch away at their leisure.
This was even easier for the squirrels because the lid just sits on top. All they have to do is flip open the top and dive right in. Easy peasy.
Another real limitation is the size. This feeder is very small so in order to keep your squirrels well fed, you must fill it quite often.
My search for a truly squirrel-proof feeder continues. Watch this space.

The feeder had to be adjusted to max. opening to let 3/4 small birds feed. Otherwise, the feeders would partially close. Also ,if the clear umbrella was higher and wider it would accommodate larger birds.

When I first saw the picture this on Amazon, I thought really nice. The drop down that blocks access to the seeds so the squirrels can’t get to them. Also, a shield that protects the seeds from the rain and squirrels.
As with any product time will tell.
The feeder that has the large chip taken out of it, and many cracks is about five years old. The second feeder is just over two years old and the shield has already started cracking. When the first feeders shield cracked, I thought we had dropped it or something but it continued cracking a different places. On the second feeder, the shield is also cracking already. As you can see on both feeders the plastic has oxidize beyond belief and the shields are cracked and the first shield separated from the feeder tube, and I needed to re-glue it in place.
Unfortunately, the good design has been compromised by poor quality plastic.
Really disappointed and angry considering the price.
