Background: I’m a complete guitar n00b, barely 6 weeks playing.

I really suck at changing strings. I am not sloppy and I am not impatient, but I find the process unnerving. After the last time that I broke a string during a simple change I couldn’t take it anymore and decided to pick up locking tuning machines. To my delight, I found that the auto-trim tuning machines had dropped in price.

Installation was absolutely painless. I probably spent more time digging for the drill bit that I needed since my screw holes did not match. I would say that even including measuring and drilling, it was less than 5 minutes per tuner.

And oh do they work. The first snip (6th string) was a bit scary. By the time I had done the 5th string I had figured out how far out of tune each string would be after the string snip. I actually missed the snip on the 4th string, turned it back a little bit, pushed the string down so it would touch the edge, tried it again and it worked. So yeah, you have to make sure that when you start turning it, the string is going to hit the cutting edge.

Tuning was a non-event, this is probably my fastest string change and tune to date.

And yes, I still need to fill and clean the old screw holes, but this is an inexpensive guitar and it doesn’t bother me.

Would I buy these again? Absolutely, I am already looking forward to pick up the inline-6 version for my Squier Affinity Telecaster. The only real question is if I’ll let these go when I get rid of this guitar or will I switch back the original tuners so I can reuse these on another guitar.

I bought 2 sets of these locking tuners to replace the existing non-locking ones on my Yamaha guitars. One set was fine, but the second one had issues (as described in my video). After changing the buttons with my original ivory Yamaha ones I started work on mounting these tuners, only to find that one of the mounting hex nuts supplied was too big!? This means that one of the 6 tuners cannot now be fixed onto the guitar head and that I need to source a chrome nut of that size. Disappointingly poor quality control from D’Addario…

UPDATE: After my review above (and initially leaving only two stars), because I didn’t want to return the tuning machines (I’d already thrown away the box…) I contacted D’Addario support directly in the US via their website. I was not expecting much, and boy was I wrong!!! A very nice person from D’Addario contacted me back the same day, apologised for the issue, made sure I checked that it was indeed the nut rather the tuning post that was the issue and promptly posted 3 replacement nuts to me from the US to the UK, free of charge. Thank you D’Addario, very impressed!!!

First, the head slapper: why did I take so long to discover locking tuning machines! I really dislike changing strings, but these make the job easy and fast. Not having to wind multiple turns, and carefully using some variation on a locking knot to reduce slippage is great. Imagine not needing a string winder/unwinder to quickly change strings, and you get the bonus of the string being clipped flush with the tuner shaft. No tool string changes! A really big deal that you have to try to realize the difference that it makes. The other big deal is tuning stability. Having the string locked in place is only part of the advantage. The other is not having several wraps around the tuning peg that have to settle in over time. Just install new strings, do the initial string stretch, and the guitar stays in tune. It is also worth mentioning that the smooth 18:1 gears, with no slippage or slop make tuning up so easy. Nothing bad to say about this product. Okay, the color clash of all but the black sets is something, but you will get over it when you experience how well they work.

Ormai è da anni che le monto su tutte le mie chitarre, sarò diventato pigro?
Metti la corda, avviti, accordi e tac, la meccanica taglia la corda superflua, come non innamorarsene?

My guitars already have locking tuners, but I had picked up a small pink 3/4 Luna electric guitar for my young daughter to learn on. It’s cheaply China made, and after replacing the strap knobs and repairing the audio jack, resetting the bridge… this cheap little guitar is not longer cheap 🙂 but she loves it.. so I continue to improve it. It had difficulty keeping tune even after resetting the bridge, so I decided to replace the tuning machines. I’ve been happy with other D’addario/Planet Waves products, so I decided to give these a try on her axe – nothing to lose really.

Please note that the picture(s) included with this product that shows an inline 6 setup isn’t showing the product that you get when you order a 3 x 3 setup. The screw position is centered, not offset. The ‘product only’ picture is much more accurate. I filled the old screw holes with JB Weld Kwikwood, and set these in new screw holes. The machines fit well in the same passthrough holes as the old machines… which was my biggest concern in installation.

The Luna guitar was easier to restring with these tuners and the lock and auto trim feature is easy and accurate. A very clean look. The guitar’s tonality with the same strings being restrung with these toners was significantly better. I’m certainly a fan of these tuners and would recommend them to replace any non locking tuner on the market. I’m not able to objectively compare locking tuning machines… but the name, the finish options, the lifetime warranty, and the price all machine these an easy choice. You can buy these with confidence.
