I wasn’t sure if the black and gold color of these tuners would look good on my guitar since it has a black headstock, but I decided to take a chance on them and I am glad I did. They look really nice and I would say they look much better than the picture shown on Amazon.
As for locking, they work pretty much just like schaller locking tuners work. Stick the string in and then tighten the knob at the bottom to hold it in place. I haven’t experienced any slippage after using them with two sets of strings. The auto-trim feature seems like a bit of a gimmick to me, but it does work. Turn the tuning key to tune the string and as you turn the key the string is trimmed, with no sharp end sticking out from the post. The feature saves a few minutes in the restringing process.
The price for them is great compared to Schaller or Grover locking tuners, the look nice and the work and keep the guitar in tune. What more can you ask for?

I recently installed the D’Addario Accessories Auto-Trim Tuning Machines on my Taylor acoustic guitar, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the upgrade. The installation process was surprisingly straightforward, and the tuning machines fit perfectly only needing to drill small holes for the anchor screws.
What really impressed me was the auto-trim feature – it cuts off the excess string neatly, saving time and eliminating the need for wire cutters (see video). This not only keeps my guitar looking clean but also makes restringing a breeze.
In terms of performance, these locking tuners are incredibly smooth and precise. They hold tuning exceptionally well, even after extended playing sessions. The build quality is solid, and they add a subtle, classy look to my guitar.
Overall, I highly recommend the D’Addario Auto-Trim Tuning Machines for anyone looking to upgrade their guitar’s tuning stability and convenience.

I’m a big fan of these tuners. I have them on several guitars. On some guitars I did have to widen the holes in the headstock to get them to fit. But I didn’t have any trouble with that. The locking feature is particularly helpful on my bigsby equipped guitar, for added tuning stability. And the trim feature is just nice.

I LOVE these tuners. I have them on my new ESP E-II Eclipse and a new Schecter C1-Classic.
The ESP came with Gotoh auto locking tuners that are absolute crap imo. They are quirky in operation, and worse than that is that they don’t hold tune. Even after a week of using new strings tuning would not stabilize.
Even though the ESP is only about a month old I decided to get the Planet Waves locking tuners. I really prefer manual locking tuners as I know the string is locked because I locked it. I have manual locking tuners on my Fender Strat since 1991 and loved manual locking since then.
The ESP with the Gotoh’s would be out of tune the next day every time.
After I installed the PW tuners the ESP now holds tune beautifully. Even if I don’t get a chance to play the ESP for 3-4 days, I pick it up and it’s in tune. Thank you Planet Waves. Goodbye Gotoh.
On the Schecter C1-Classic it comes with really nice non locking Grover tuners. Grover makes excellent tuners and I’ve always had great experience with them. I was considering Grover locking tuners but the price on the PW’s was too good to pass up.
They work awesomely on the Schecter just as they do on the ESP.
The PW’s on the Schecter are gold and chrome on the ESP, and the finish on both sets is beautiful, right up there with even more expensive tuners.
Some may not like the all black posts, but I actually like the contrast they give.
Customer support from D’addario is great too. They make and distribute the Planet Waves tuners. I had a couple of questions and emailed their support. I got a response back within a day and my answers.
Oh, and one more cool feature of these tuners. The excess string gets cut automatically by the PW tuners. It really does work.
The first time I tried to use the tuners I bent the strings up 90 degree’s like I always do and then I cut them manually.
Well, since I bent the strings up only 1 string got cut properly and another got cut mostly, the rest didn’t get cut.
I was like, WTF? After looking at the cutting mechanism I realized that I need to leave the strings alone. Do NOT bend them, leave them coming straight out from the tuner.
That way, as you turn the tuner to tighten the string, the string comes into contact with the cutting mechanism and cuts your strings one at a time. Works great. Feels odd at first as there is more force required to turn the tuner as the string hits the cutter.
If you want stable tuning and smooooooth operation, and a high fine tune ratio, then get these tuners.
I’m getting another set for my PRS semi hollow. And my ’91 American Strat Plus Deluxe needs new tuners. The locking Schallers are a fantastic tuner, but they have gotten old. And that guitar has seen a LOT of use. I’m going back and forth between another set of Schaller’s to keep it original, or go with a set of PW’s.
Not sure yet.
Get THESE!

I installed these on an epiphone acoustic. They work just as advertised. They look nice. They are very easy to install. The screw holes did not align with the old tuner’s screw holes but that didn’t bother me. I just drilled small holes for the new screws.

Looking at these on a guitar when they don’t have a single wrap on the post, I found it hard to believe the strings would even stay on but I have now installed two sets of these on two different guitars. One black set and the other is gold. The first guitar would not stay in tune so I tried these. They have been on for nearly a year now and they totally fixed my tuning problem. The second set I put on my brand new Gibson Les Paul only because the first ones worked so well. Super easy fast string changes with the auto trim feature, and no tuning issues at all. At 18:1 gear ratio they dial in a perfect tune and hold it. I prefer these over Grover or any other higher priced tuners available.
I have added a few pictures. The new tuners covered the holes on my Les Paul so it looks great from the back. The Other is an Ibanez AR420. You can see the original mounting holes so I filled them with wood putty and will use model car paint to match to cover the spots.

This is the coolest product I’ve bought in years. Just push the strings through the hole, lock and start tuning; the excess length snaps out like magic. String change time is greatly reduced. I usually end up pricking myself during string changes. Glad those days are gone. Also the finish is superb.
The effort of turning the keys is a little more than normal but I’m ok with that.

Excellent product. I wanted to change out the factory tuners (which were good enough already) to gold so I chose these. They installed easily, they look wonderful, the locks perform exactly as they should and they help hold the guitar in tune wonderfully. The high E string and the B string do not always self trim but it is an easy thing to pull out the wire cutters and is not a significant enough matter to me to influence my five star rating.
Donn Grant –
