I am an intermediate tenor player who plays for my own personal enjoyment. When I first put this on my horn a few months ago, I had been playing a HR Vandoren V16 medium chamber with a 6 tip opening, and the 7 tip D’Addario felt a bit too open for me. But I have found the right reed combo for me (using a Rico Plasticover 2.5) and now I really love this mpc, much more than my V16.
Another reviewer felt this mpc is darker than the V16, but to my ear I feel is a brighter piece, and that might be attributable to the Rico reeds which can be buzzier/brighter. But I can play lower register subtones easily, as well as make it scream with some edge. What I really like about it is that my upper register notes do not sound thin at all, which happens for me on some mpcs. And although I am not strong in the altissimo range, I am starting to pop out notes that do not pop on other mpcs that I have used or tried.
A mouthpiece is such a personal choice, and there is no ideal mpc for all styles or players, obviously. But this is giving me the most flexibilty with the best overall results. My only complaint is that the mpc fits a bit too tighly on my Yamaha 62 neck, and leaves the cork a little too loose for other mpcs. I have seen similar comments about this issue, I wish D’Addario would address this minor problem.

Just received mouthpiece today and really pleased with it…easy free blowing ..i normally play a no6 mouthpiece but based on other reviews moved up a step to no7..plays great with Legere American Cut 2.5..a great combination for me for all genres.a really worthwhile purchase for me.

Fantastic mouthpiece and a very reasonable price! D’addario has really come through with this series – it is very comparable to the Vandoren V16 series but with very evident increased projection and darkness (vintage sound)! It can also go brighter just as easily too! Very easy blowing and great intonation, I use a Rovner Versa-X Ligature with it and absolutely love it!

I found this mouthpiece while looking for a good jazz mouthpiece. It is pretty cheap considering the price of other quality mouthpieces, and after reading the reviews, I ordered it to try it out. This mouthpiece plays very well, and is easy to play. It also feels really high quality, and as I mentioned, is relatively cheap. Would recommend for those looking to get into Jazz.

Look, mouthpiece assessments are very subjective, so please understand this is only one player’s opinion, albeit, a former pro who’s been at it, on and off, for 40 years. The D’A Select Jazz is an OK hard rubber piece, and certainly more than OK for its cost. To my ear, it’s too bright, and not in an especially pleasing way. I felt it outplayed the Jody Jazz HR* but wasn’t as nice as a Phil-Tone Equinox, costing $150 more. I’ll try another low-cost Vandoren V16, and I have a Mouthpiece Cafe House Blend on order, handmade by Brian Powell. I’ve been a metal player for my career, but am investigating hard rubber for their lower cost, as a backup. I will hopefully find one I like, but this DSJ was not a keeper. Hopefully, they’ve fixed their initial problem of a bore that is too small to fit on most tenor corks. It played well and sounded alright, but again, I didn’t like its high-end sizzle.

I have a Berg 100/1 with a large chamber and while I love the big sound, it’s hard to punch power out of it or make the altissimo speak. When I heard this D’addario being reviewed alongside other mouthpieces on YouTube (by players much better than I am) it really stood out. Warm, dark sound but with a bright edge, and plenty of power and altissimo. So I gave it a try, and it’s a beast. Took a while to get used to, but now I love it.
This is pretty much a straight-thru mouthpiece, not much resistance, so you’re gonna have to build your chops up. I’m still working on mine after all that nice resistance with the Berg, and because I got the 8M (.110 opening). But if you’re looking for power & altissimo while still having a dark sound @ your disposal, check this one out. Depending on what you do with your embouchure, you can get a sharp cutting sound with plenty of power but also can go to a soft tender one, all on the same mouthpiece. It’s a monster!

Bocchino probabilmente molto sottovalutato, preso ad un prezzo più che vantaggioso rispetto al prezzo di listino vale in ogni caso tutti i soldi che costa anche se lo prendete a prezzo pieno. Qualità costruttiva buonissima (l’ho fatto visionare e verificare ad un noto refacer) misura in tavola quanto dichiarato sulla confezione. Molto potente e proiettivo suona molto meglio di un po’ di roba più costosa pompata dal marketing.
