J. Gibbons –
Beecham was a superb Mozartian and this disc, containing three works recorded with the RPO in the late 1950’s, is a fine memorial to his art.
The ‘Jupiter’ symphony is perfectly paced, beautifully phrased, and lovingly detailed. The andante is especially lovely and the final allegro has a rhythmic drive that, never frantic, I have never heard before in any performance of this work. Indeed, it is so convincing that it is easy to forgive Beecham for his added tympany in the final bars!
The clarinet concerto, in the hands of Jack Brymer, receives a wonderful performance – finer in my opinion than his later recording for Philips – and Beecham’s accompaniment is perfectly judged. Indeed, such is the synergy between soloist, conductor, and orchestra that one might be listening to a small chamber ensemble. After more than half a century this remains one of the very finest recordings of the greatest of all clarinet concertos.
Gwydion Brooke takes the solo part in the less well known basoon concerto. This again is a splendidly integrated and moving performance which well deserves its classic status.
Both soloists were, of course, members of the RPO when it was directed by Beecham and their great familiarity with his style, approach to Mozart, and amazing attention to details of phrasing and articulation, were certainly powerful factors in assuring such arresting performances.
EMI’s fine early stereo sound is heard here at its best and the remastering is excellent. Lyndon Jenkins has written excellent and informative notes. Highly recommended.

Daisy W –
Terrific performances of these three great works by past artists of impeccable quality. The recordings are surprisingly
good too given their great age. A real benchmark in all ways. Much recommended.
