My son was working under the house and you know how dirty that could be, he didn’t want to take his cell phone so we used these walkies

These make for a great option for those looking for simple radios that have a decent range to them. They also make for a decent option for those looking for a little bit more than “simple”.
At first, we thought that these radios might not accomplish much based on the price. We have made us of several radios over the years, ranging from your most basic Motorola walkie-talkie models to the high-powered digitally encrypted radio options. So we’ve had our fair share of radios over the years, and pretty much none of them fell into this price range. So how could these radios live up to some of these? Especially, when this comes with THREE radios vs two.
It was a nice surprise to see that it does live up to some of these other radios. Clearly not the advanced digital ones we use when our teams are covering things on the go, but they do live up to a lot of these models that fall less than $80-$100. Not only do they offer you up to 22 channels to play with, but you get access to a good number of privacy codes to help isolate your communication from anyone else that might fall upon your channel.
The range isn’t bad either. This is where these might not live up to some of the other radios falling less than $100, but they still carry a good range for what they are. In fact, unless you are hiking at long distances from each other, these should work in many ways. Especially, if you are using for indoor radios (unless your building makes use of a lot of metal and cement in between floors and walls. You should be able to easily get across an average building with these, or a few blocks within a busy city.
This makes these great for kids and adults alike. However, if it’s kids you are looking to buy for. Stop looking. You found it 🙂

We purchased a set of 3 as a Christmas gift for our young kids! Our boys are 4 and 6 and we wanted a third unit for mom or dad. We tried a few “kids” walkie talkies (about $30 for three units) found they went out of range much sooner than we’d like—then we ordered these. The sound quality and range on these was much better so we didn’t mind paying more (about $50 for 3 units).
I also really love that these are rechargeable, because we would burn through batteries quickly!
About a month after opening them, one unit started malfunctioning—squelch stopped working so there was constant static unless someone was signaling. After a factory reset it stopped communicating with the other units at all. The seller was very responsive, first troubleshooting the problem and finally replacing the unit.
My boys are still a bit young for them and the younger one in particular has trouble remembering to hold/release the talk button at the appropriate times. For now, we most often use them on bike rides (kids on bikes, mama on foot). I set their radios to be sound activated and clip them to their bikes, and the boys can hear me and respond. Since I can’t keep up with them I really appreciate being able to coach or give instructions when they are too far ahead to hear me.

They work really well, range is good, but our daughter accidentally forgot she had it and got it wet in the water. One is fried.

I bought 2 sets of these to use has intercoms around the house. I hate having to scream for the kids. So I drop one of these in every room of the house and I call for them through the walkie talkies. Here are some pros and cons.
PROS:
– very inexpensive full featured walkie talkies
– has your standard channels and privacy codes
– easy to push buttons (some walkie talkies need a lot finger pushing force) so these are great for kids
– uses standard rechargeable AA batteries
– you can keep these plugged into a micro USB 5V source and leave them turned on 24/7. (This was a big deal for me since I wanted to use these as home intercoms.)
CONS:
– It does tend to pick up interference pretty easily so at my home I do hear some slight buzzing in the background. But it doesn’t interfere with speech and I’m able to easily understand the other person.
– The volume range doesn’t seem very wide. The speaker volume is neither too loud or too soft in general, but even if you play with the volume, it doesn’t seem to make very big difference.
UNKNOWNS:
– Range. I don’t know how far these travel. Generally speaking, FRS/GMRS walkie talkies don’t have very good usable range (even if the manufacturer claims miles and miles of range). That’s because the frequencies are easily blocked by everything — walls, trees, buildings. You need absolute line of site to get the maximum range, which is pretty difficult
– Durability. These are advertised for kids so. So far they work out great in my home but I’m for sure not going to use them in critical situations.
– VOX. I haven’t tested this.
– Headset. It doesn’t come with headsets but has a port of a headset which I have not tested.
TIPS:
– Always hold down the talk button for 1 second before you speak. This will allow time for the receiving walkie talkies to detect your transmission, and that way the start of your sentence doesn’t get chopped off.
– Leave the “ROG” feature on. This enables the beep when you release the talk button and that tells the other person you’re done talking. Then the other person can respond. Remember walkie talkies are simplex (not duplex) so you can’t talk and listen simultaneously.
– Keep the walkie talkies far enough away from each other so you can’t hear each other when speaking. Walkie talkie microphones are sensitive and keeping them too close to each other will easily cause feedback which sounds like high pitched whistling or interference noises when you’re trying to talk.

These are nice walkie talkies but unfortunately 3 of mine are dead now. When I plug them in, nothing happens (you can’t see the battery icon and can’t turn them on.
They did last for a little while.
Any chance they can be replaced???
