The 10 x 9.4 x 4.8 Jack Boss case is an obvious knockoff of the popular Pelican 1200 case; the inside dimensions match almost exactly.

Probably because I own and have used Pelican cases, my first impression on unboxing the Jack Boss case was that it felt cheap, and in fact, it is. However, it’s also about half the cost of the case it’s meant to knock-off. So, depending on ones’ budget and usage, this case may be perfectly adequate. That said, an important consideration is the value of the equipment meant to be stored and transported in the case; choosing protection for equipment that may have a valuation of hundreds or thousands of dollars is no time to consider budget alternatives to premium safety.

The Jack Boss case, in comparison, is roughly half the weight of the Pelican because the fabrication uses outer plastic material that is mostly half the thickness; this is plain to see in a side-by-side comparison. This case will not provide the same protection as the Pelican 1200, it’s just not structurally feasible when made with material half the weight.

One thing that does bother me is that what I received is not the same case shown pictured on its Amazon PoP page. It’s a close approximation, but the features missing as compared to the pictorial description are, in my opinion, important considerations.

First, the handle of the unit I received isn’t rubberized as in the picture, and secondly, the hasp through holes aren’t metal reinforced. Another consideration is the pressure valve. The seller states that it keeps water out by keeping air pressure in, but doesn’t advise if it allows for depressurization. Short of taking a ratchet wrench to it (I didn’t check the size, but it has the hexagonal shape of a bolt), I didn’t find it to be adjustable. It may be a 2-way valve, but that isn’t stated. In addition, no specific IPX water resistance rating is cited. Furthermore, the case isn’t branded as shown in the picture either, but that’s neither here nor there as far as I’m concerned.

I don’t typically like to make comparisons when doing reviews, but if the subject is an obvious knock-off of a well-known brand, in this case one that is an industry standard, then in my opinion, the seller is asking for it. So, what’s my bottom Line? This is budget, amateur equipment for light usage. By light, I mean local travel, in/out of vehicles, storage and hand carried air travel. In that use case scenario is it worth the $30? Yea, probably, and you get two for the price of one name brand case. But I would suggest to any interested party to do price comparisons against this case to see what else is out there for $30.

I’m going to rate it 3-Stars. Why? Compared to its pictures on the product page, what I received is an almost entirely different case, even the outer ribbing doesn’t match. So distinct are the differences that it creates the impression of a bait and switch transaction. The product pictures create an entirely different impression of the cases quality. I provided pictures that can be used for comparison.

I’m a documentarian and own about 40 of these types of cases, containing all types of film-making gear. Most of them are Pelican cases and rest are primarily Harbor Freight cases.

    Likes:
    – Much better than Harbor Freight cases at a similar price point. The pluck foam is more dense and very similar to Pelican cases. The case itself is thicker and flexes less than the HF cases.

    – Great value. This case is a bit larger than a Pelican 1200 and half the price. I own many 1200’s and feel that the build quality is nearly identical.

    – No branding. I appreciate that the case doesn’t have any logos on it and I can use that area to apply my own inventory control sticker.

    Dislikes:
    – The padlock holes are not metal reinforced as they show in the product photos (and how both the Harbor Freight and Pelican cases are made). I don’t lock my smaller cases so this isn’t a huge concern for me, but I did want to point out a difference in what was pictured vs what I received.

    – The overpressure valve doesn’t look like the product photos. Pelican cases have an automatic OPV that doesn’t need to be adjusted. Harbor Freight cases’ OPVs have to be screwed down (to make watertight) or screwed open (to allow the case to breathe as altitude changes). The product photos for this case look like the manual valves for the HF cases, but the case I received doesn’t have a screw cap (or even a threaded nipple for a screw cap). So I have no idea how, or even if, this valve functions. I would be hesitant about flying with one of these cases in checked baggage since it might blow the case seal.

Bottom line: While I received this product at no cost through the Vine program to review, I will likely be purchasing additional cases with my own money when needed. This is a solid “thumbs up” if the couple issues I mentioned don’t affect you.

The Jack Boss 10×9.4×4.8 Inch Hard Case is a reliable and durable solution for protecting valuable equipment. Its waterproof design and customizable foam interior provide excellent protection for cameras, drones, and other delicate items. The sturdy construction ensures resilience against impacts and harsh conditions, making it suitable for various environments.

However, the case’s interior dimensions of 9.3x7x3 inches may not accommodate larger equipment, and the lack of additional compartments could limit organization options. Overall, this case offers solid protection and quality.

Excellent case: quality is right up there with Pelican cases. Solidly built and has pre-cut grid foam tp customize to your items. Totally weatherproof. Really happy with this.

I bought it for a boat tool box to keep salt away from the tools. Looks like it is going to work out well. I’ll know at the end of next summer after it’s been on the water for a while.

I bought this to use for my Fujifilm X100V and it works perfectly. Just pick and pluck the foam in the shape needed for your camera gear and you are good to go. Waterproof and durable.

This case is perfect for anything you want to protect. Fully adjustable compartments. You can use the pieces you pull out and lay them in sideways and keep smaller things shallow. I purchased mine to keep 2 drones in. Plenty of room and some to spare. No zippers, just 2 sturdy latches and 2 pad lock areas. Great product.

Mine arrived with no scratches/scuffs/defects. The rubber seal looks good. I was curious if it was really waterproof since I’m going to be putting an expensive radio in it. My hard case took a shower. It appears to be waterproof the foam was still dry inside.
