Absolutely terrible design!! Danger! I’d give 0 stars if I could.
CANNOT WASH PROPERLY DUE TO DESIGN!!
You cannot take the feeder apart to clean the components, it just doesn’t make any sense. Therefore, you can very easily make the hummingbirds really sick or poison them with molds or rot. On top of that it was extremely difficult to screw the top back on. Contacted Perky Pet about the design. They welcomed my concerns, but of course they will still be selling off their inventory.
I believe this design was to address the fact that the previous model was leaking. But, in fixing the leak, there’s a very serious oversight and they’re jeopardizing the hummies or hummers.
Lots of better models out there. And read other reviews too…

I purchased three hummingbird feeders of the same type. The older style the plastic on them is not holding up like the older ones. I broke two in one week. Actually, they fell all by themselves and broke. I am very displayed with the company that manufactures them. I have used them all my life and will now switch to a different company.

I had this feeder for over 12 years, unfortunately dropped it and the glass broke. I was super happy that they are still available, I bought 4. I highly recommend them over the plastic ones that just leak all over the ground which attracts aunts. You pay the same price for those cheap ones and believe me I bought many kinds because I put a lot of feeders up as I live in the country and adore hummingbirds.

Overall I like the Feeder.
My only concern is I have not been able to figure out how to open the base for cleaning even after visiting Perky Pet’s website and trying to twist it open. As cleaning is essential for hummingbird feeders I am disappointed in that.
There was nothing on the tag to indicate whether it opens or not.

UPDATE: July 25, 2010
I am shocked to say that after purchasing this in 10-08, it is still working quite well. Last year it became the gathering place for ants for a while. I used the sticky side of duct tape and it helped but the real solution was my hand made ant guard. It is a multi-level “keeper away” device which incorporates gravity and water to ward off ants. By the time the ants navigated the device they either gave up or died and none made it to the feeder unless it had wings and could fly there.
The hummers have made this their favorite watering hole and are there from day break to sunset with a time out to hunt bugs and blooms. There will probably be a new one in the mail soon providing all goes well with other adventures.
UPDATE: June 23, 2009
Now our feeder has become the most popular feeder in the yard for ANTS. This morning I emptied 1″ of ants off the top of the food. That’s a lot of ants in 12 hours. The hummers took leave since they do not care for black ants. I put an ant trap in the top and a 4″ swath of lithium on the staff coupled with an 8″ length of sticky side out tape. Hope that works.

Along came spring and the hummers came back only to take a fly at the 476-3 feeder and quickly leave. It has been 8 feedings and not one has enjoyed their feeding as much as last year. Is it the feeder? Is it the formula (same as last year – 4 to 1) or is there an enemy in the woods or close by? I changed the feeder to one from several years ago and it worked but the 476-3 is a non-plus.
Forget about the fact that this is a really nice hummer feeder. It has the adjustable feeding stands and a top that can be used for a funnel. It has a nice heft to it and is well made. What makes this 5 stars is the birds really appear to like it. I say appear because I have not learned hummer talk yet. Altogether we have 5 feeders in the yard and this is the most popular among the birds. There is no reason to spend money on hummers if you do not like them but if you do such as we, then you will enjoy watching them and their routines. There is something to behold in watching about 12 at a time going from one feeder to another while they are chasing each other. It is quite an experience and I thank the Garden Jewel folks for permitting me to buy the feeder.

UPDATE March 2009: Put out feeder today — realized when putting pieces back together, the 2 bottom sections have to be aligned just right for the perches to match up with the flower ports — to do this, I could not tighten the bases completely. I actually had to tighten and then un-screw a bit for everything to match up. Now, I am concerned about possible leakage. I will have to monitor for this…if leakage is a problem, this feeder will be a definite problem. We’ll see…
I have several years of experience feeding hummers, and this is my new favorite feeder…very sturdy, good capacity — don’t have to refill too often, thick glass, excellent feeding ports and adjustable perches. But the reason I will keep buying it and buy it for gifts is: it is the easist to clean that I have ever had!!! 🙂 This is so important to keeping the hummers safe and healthy, and to keep them returning to your feeders. The entire base comes apart and there are no nooks/crannies to maneuver around — only flat surfaces. Opus also makes a great window hummingbird feeder which Amazon sells. Invest in a brush set to clean, especially the really small brush to get into the drinking ports, and you will be set to enjoy hummingbirds all season! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this feeder!!

This is a very heavy feeder with large nectar holes. Flies find their way inside the glass almost as soon as I set it out. The neck on the feeder glass is too small for my normal bottle washer swab to get inside to clean.

The threaded glass at the bottom of the feeder that the plastic nectar dispenser piece screws into came chipped as pictured, reordered and the second one came with a broken plastic flower petal. Neither broken piece was inside the shipping box, so this damage happened before packing and shipping. Someone needs to quality check their merchandise prior to packing it up. The first feeder was returned, the second one I didn’t notice the damage until after I put nectar into it. Check your product before using it. Otherwise, this is a heavy-duty beautiful hummingbird feeder, glass is thick, and it’s lovely hanging outside my window.
