Neck is like rubber, fret buzzing everywhere no matter how many adjustments, weak electronics. In this price range I would suggest an American made Gibson Les Paul studio model. Don’t throw your money away on this PRS SE.

With so much hype and promotion, I honestly was expecting some disappointment. But I actually have to say this is an excellent guitar. Playability is superb and truly a pleasure. I’ve owned a PRS basic model 25 yrs ago and I think the standard has improved since then. It’s a beautiful guitar. I got the “tobacco” sunburst, but its really more like a “golden” sunburst with the flame maple veneer popping out gold and orangish wood grains. (Great choice for those like me that find the gold top version to resemble a cheap spray paint job). Would have preferred a see through stain on neck and back instead of black. While the “split coil” feature sounds nothing like a single coil, I’m liking the ability to instantly reduce the “hotness” of these pickups without losing much volume. This gives 75% of the gain and basically sounds like a weaker humbucker. It’s unclear whether this is a coil tap or a blended parallel split, but it’s very functional. Like having two sets of pickups! The fret job was immaculate – even, polished, and burnished ends. No high frets. Came with high action and stiff strings which had to be changed immediately… the 25″ scale length is a bit too long to comfortably afford what felt like .11’s on this guitar – replaced with .09s.

    Now the cons:
    1. the red tone knobs have to go. That color makes no sense with this guitar and more importantly the numbers on the dial are illegible. I’ve just ordered these nice gold top hat knobs with CLEAR lucite white on black lettering. Much more functional and matching aesthetic. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08MBQ24VN/ref=syn_sd_onsite_mobileweb_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pd_rd_plhdr=t&th=1)
    2. The “blend” middle toggle select position does not seem to sum the 2 volume controls as expected. If only 1 volume knob is all the way down, that position gets no sound for EITHER pickup. Cool if you want to use the toggle as a full cutoff switch – and maybe that’s an ADDED feature – not sure yet.
    3. Really would like separate tone controls for each pickup. With such hot and bright pickups as these, I need to set both volume and tones independently. Quite a big deal when switching between neck/bridge. I find I have to twiddle the tone each time I switch. I may add an additional tone pot.
    4. The volume pots seem to have linear (vs. audio) taper, which means the tone is relatively unaffected when dialing down. With such hot pickups (they are unusually “full” range i.e. bright), I would prefer a greater loss of tone on dialing down volume.
    5. The vibrato bar is a bit high off the strings compared to Fender style bars, making it difficult to use without disengaging your picking hand from the strings.
    6. Instead of having a single push/pull on the single tone knob to control the “split coil” for both pickups, it would be far more functional to have separate push/pull for each pickup on the volume controls. This would provide 2 additional combos when in pickup blend mode and make for easier switching between for example: neck HB to bridge split. I may do a mod for this.

All in all I give this guitar:
    ***** workmanship/polish
    ***** beauty
    **** functionality
    **** sound/pickups
    **** hardware components

For the price, this is truly a great value guitar. With a few inexpensive mods (knobs and pots) this could be outstanding.

I hear a lot about how great this guitar and it does not disappoint. The guitar has great resonance and a beautiful finish. The neck has a great feel. Stays in tune. You can tell that a lot of work was put into it’s design. The best SE model of all the SE models. The only negative is that the knobs seem cheap but that can be an easy upgrade.

I couldn’t believe the price because PRS makes every dealer sell it for the fixed price. The guitar is amazing and came in perfect shape and playability.
