My apologies for my first review. My beloved husband made a mistake when he first tried to plug the bass in…through the computer rather than through an amp. We thought the knobs did not work. After taking it to a shop where they confirmed nothing was wrong, my husband brought it home, realized he had the wrong setting on the computer, and admitted he was a goombah.
Once he plugged it in to his proper bass rig and started playing, both of our jaws dropped! It is the best sounding bass we have ever heard! I am now officially the “Best Wife Ever” for buying him this instrument!
We have dubbed it “The Beast” because it is rather neck heavy and it goes from purr to growl to roar in no time flat. It is a whole different level of instrument. It exudes power … like we have released a panther. We joke that he needs to feed it before band practice to prevent it from eating a fellow band member.
This is a bass for the experienced, discerning bass musician who is looking for a powerful instrument that refuses to hide in the background of the mix. Might want to keep a whip and chair handy…just in case…

The build quality is outstanding on this instrument. The extra bolts that sink the neck, the inset low bridge and the fantastic set up out of the factory contribute to the amazingly low action and incredible playability. This also enhances the stability and consistency of the instrument. It is alive with harmonics, which can be pulled out easily on the cleanest of sounds. Lightning fast neck is also fantastic.
Unique additional features: Dual output, much like a Rickenbacker, you can send each pickup to a different amp; though this is simpler with two jacks and thus two cables instead of a split cable requirement like the Rick. It is worth going through single only as well because you can get some different sounds that way. Also, the Hipshot Detuner for Drop D – as a guitarist who also plays Bass, I have played a number of EVH D Tuna equipped guitars. I personally find this Hipshot system much, much easier to use, and it seems to hold the tune more stably back and forth between E and D. Finally, the high cut on the Bass pickup (pull up the tone knob) is a very cool feature; noting that it is especially interesting when the split pickup and the neck/bass pickup are fully mixed evenly; a very cool out of phase, wah like effect is created (good for playing licks high on the neck).
Of note, some dealers state that the case is included, some that it’s sold separately, however, this definitely comes with a very nice tolex case.
Finally, a few technical notes that I didn’t see documentation on: Three knobs – front most is neck volume, back most is the split/P-Bass pickup volume, middle knob is the tone knob. The tone knob only affects the neck/bass pickup – it has NO affect on the middle/P-Bass, split pickup. The rear knob – pull up to send single signal with both pickups to rear/right output jack; down splits it, then the P-Bass style pickup goes to the right/rear, the neck/front goes to the forward/left jack. The middle knob pulls up to engage the high cut feature (again, this will have the most noticeable effect when output is single and both pickups are turned all the way up – it yields a wah-like out of phase effect).
Overall this is already one of my favorite basses (owned a short time). The sound is amazing, playability is top notch, could not be better. Billy Sheehan and Yamaha have concocted a masterpiece of an instrument. It’s worth every penny.
