Some reviewers have complained that the piece they received was not as big as expected. I did not have that issue – mine was as specified. Beautiful wood tones, some dark and some light. I did need to take a lot of time to have some of the tannins leach out. I put the piece in a five gallon bucket full of water, and changed it twice a day for a couple of weeks. Even then, I was still getting a little color leaching out. But it didn’t change the water color very much in a 50 gallon tank, and after a couple more weeks in the tank it is not changing the color at all. Recommended!

I will admit, I was nervous ordering this mopani wood since I’ve only ever bought it from the store where I can pick out my specific piece, but I am so glad I decided to get it here. It was honestly a fun experience having the mystery of not knowing exactly what my piece would look like, and it was absolutely beautiful when it arrived! It fits perfectly into my 90 gal aquarium, and my 17″ pleco already adores it.

Beautiful, heavy (sinks in aquarium) wood with light coloration (like the picture) and dark coloration (almost black). I like the contrasts, but others might not, and the picture doesn’t show the possible dark coloration that might be on part of the driftwood (both of my pieces had dark on most of their underside). I love it for my RES tank. The turtles love it. Just be certain to boil it (or at least soak and rinse it for a long time) first to try to get all the tannins (yellow color that dyes the water) out if you are using it for an aquarium.
Also, supposedly the tannins can change the pH of the water in case you have sensitive fish or critters, but if you boil it I wouldn’t be too worried about it. If the water starts going yellow just keep changing it more frequently until eventually the wood stops leaking.

Very happy with this purchase. The picture of the product on Amazon doesn’t do it much service. This is my 2nd of two Zoo Med Mopani driftwood pieces and they were both generally straight pieces of wood akin to a fallen branch. I know that many users have trepidation about buying because you don’t know what you are going to get but I rolled the dice and it worked out pretty good. The piece is definitely dense, heavy and it sunk quickly in my freshwater tank. I didn’t measure the length but 18″ is probably a fair guess. It had some serious girth to it though, so you are getting a serious piece of wood, not a lanky twig. Overall, very pleased with the driftwood and would definitely recommend purchasing it to others.

Is nothing like the pic more of a big stump. I let is soak for a few hours in water but it has stillcoloured the water in my fish tank but dont think it has harmed my fish. Not wat I was hoping for but still quite nice.

This species of wood is beautiful and speaks for itself. However, this particular piece was shorter than the description stated. It is advertised as 16″ – 18″. Standing on its base, my piece is around 10″. I measured the longest section I could find, diagonally, and it came out to only 13″. I know the product can’t match the picture on Amazon, but I was hoping for something that reached closer to the top of my fish tank, instead of only halfway.
I was willing to let the short measurements slide, but the chainsaw gash at the top of the piece sealed the deal for me to return the product. Based on the high ratings, it seems like others have had better luck with their purchases, so I think purchasing from here is a gamble.

This is my 2nd attempt to purchase driftwood for my 55-gal aquarium. The first order was returned because the two medium pieces that were delivered were actually small ones. They were immediately returned. My 2nd order was for a large piece and it was ideal. The piece was about 18″ long and had many unique holes and locations for Java fern plants. I’m very happy with this piece.

We have a 55 gallon tank that has a few plecos, an eel and an oscar. I wanted to add some decor that would withstand the somewhat destructive nature of the oscar, (although ours is super chill – enough that we can have plants). We already had some large rocks in addition to plants, but wanted to add something else with height. I took a chance on getting this mopani wood, not knowing what we would actually get since every piece is unique and am so glad I did. When we received it, I was very pleased with the size. It is about 1ft high and 18inches long, and curves around in a ‘C’ shape. It is flat on the bottom so it rests securely on the bottom of the tank, then curves up and over like an arch.
I soaked the wood in a 5 gallon bucket for a week, doing water changes with HOT water each day. I think I scrubbed the wood with a scrub brush twice just to get any residual dirt off. After the 5 gallons of water started pouring out almost clear, I put the wood in the tank.
The first 2 weeks or so in the tank, it did leech quite a bit still. I probably could have soaked in the bucket a bit longer. But I just was very diligent about my water changes and cleaning my tank filter out once a week. By week 3, the brownish tint to the water was barely noticeable, and it has remained that way ever since. Very slight discoloration, which I actually like because it adds a natural look. My water pH has balanced nicely as well.
The wood has added such a great look and ambiance to the tank. The colors entwining through the wood is gorgeous. My oscar likes to swim around and behind it, and the plecos LOVE it. They eat off it all the time, keeping it clean. I am very happy and may consider getting one more piece in the future!

I disliked the shape of the last one I got but I will deal with it. I know once the tannins are out it ,it will last longer than any other type of driftwood. A very sturdy piece of driftwood.

First of all its natural wood to clarify You can not expect it to be identical to the picture. My piece of wood was very lovely we were quite surprise considering the amount of complaining some ppl are doing expecting it to be identical to the product picture. My piece of wood was very the large as it states 18 inch and im very happy with this piece.
Also it releases tannis staining ur water well, what fish are u getting it for my red belly Piranhas love this water condition and that is the purpose of the African wood. If you want a wood that doesn’t do this perhaps you should seek a more natural wood for your fish one that originates from where you fish comes from, otherwise i cant figure out these reviews as it is nothing that the description of the wood already states
It a lovely piece of wood the shipping is fast very happy thank you!
